Tucked away for a high-energy day out, the massive Casela Nature Parks is packed with ways to get your heart rate up. You can spend the afternoon tearing up dirt tracks on quad bikes, soaring high above the canopy on ziplines, crossing wobbly suspension bridges, or taking a spin on the Tulawaka Gold Coaster alongside safari-style wildlife drives.

Aapravasi Ghat is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression. As the UNESCO-listed immigration depot where thousands of indentured labourers first arrived in the 19th century, it tells the remarkable story of migration, resilience, and the diverse communities that shaped modern Mauritius.

L'Aventure du Sucre goes far beyond the story of sugar production. Housed inside a former sugar factory, the museum explores Mauritius’ colonial past, the impact of slavery, and the island’s economic development through engaging exhibits. Rum and sugar tastings at the end add a memorable local touch.

Château de Labourdonnais combines history, architecture, and beautiful surroundings in one visit. The elegant 19th-century mansion offers a glimpse into colonial life, while the estate’s tropical orchards, gardens, and locally produced rum create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

Set high in the misty southern mountains, Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) is a sacred crater lake that is the spiritual heart of Mauritius’ Hindu community. On most days, the atmosphere is calm, with temples, shrines and towering statues surrounding the water. During Maha Shivaratri, however, everything changes as thousands of barefoot pilgrims make their way here from across the island, creating an unforgettable spectacle of devotion.

The city’s busiest market offers a glimpse into everyday life that you will never get in a shopping centre. Stalls overflow with fruit, vegetables, spices and street food, while traders call out to regular customers who have been coming here for years. Pick up a freshly made dholl puri or a chilled alouda, then spend some time wandering through the maze of narrow aisles.

The tea factory explains how Mauritius’ best-known tea is produced, but the setting is what stays with most visitors. Rolling green plantations stretch across the hills, and the views towards the south coast are spectacular. Before leaving, settle onto the terrace with a fresh pot of tea and take in the peaceful surroundings.

Hidden among sugarcane fields in the southwest, this modern distillery is well worth a visit. The bright red roof of this small seaside church has become one of Mauritius's most photographed landmarks. It sits beside a peaceful fishing village where colourful boats rest in the bay and locals quietly go about their day. Even a short stop here is enough to appreciate its relaxed setting and coastal views.

Hidden among the busy streets of central Port Louis, this beautiful mosque feels surprisingly peaceful once you step inside. Its architecture blends Indian, Creole and Islamic influences, while the courtyard offers a welcome break from the noise and energy of the surrounding commercial district.

Usually falling in January or February, Chinese New Year transforms Port Louis’ Chinatown into a riot of colour, rhythm and life. You can hear the firecrackers snapping over the hum of the crowd as lion and dragon dancers weave past packed storefronts, while streets draped in bright red banners hum with the promise of prosperity for the year ahead.

Taking place in January or February, Thaipoosam Cavadee stands as a pillar of devotion for Mauritius’ Tamil community. Following days of quiet fasting and prayer, devotees shoulder intricate, flower-draped cavadees and gleaming pots of milk on a pilgrimage to the temples, some stepping forward in acts of intense personal penance for Lord Murugan.

Held in February or March, Maha Shivratri draws the island into its largest and most mesmerising Hindu pilgrimage. Thousands clad entirely in white walk miles toward the misty crater lake of Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), balancing beautifully crafted bamboo kanwars on their shoulders to offer prayers to Lord Shiva in the cool mountain air.

Celebrated in March, Holi bursts across the island to herald the arrival of spring in a blur of vibrant powders, splashing water, and beating drums. Streets and backyards fill with laughter and the sweet scent of traditional treats as friends and strangers alike smear each other in bright hues, making it easily the most exuberant day of the year.

Observed every 12 March, this national holiday marks the anniversary of Mauritius breaking free in 1968 and its later evolution into a republic. The island wears its pride openly through crisp flag-raising ceremonies, sharp military parades and neighbourhood cultural events that spill out into every corner of the community.

Marking the close of Ramadan according to the lunar calendar, Eid al-Fitr begins with quiet morning prayers before homes swing open their doors for grand family feasts. It is a deeply warm season defined by the rustle of exchanged gifts, visits to cherished relatives and a strong communal spirit of sharing with those less fortunate.

Held every 9 September, Father Laval Day draws massive waves of Mauritians on foot to Sainte Croix in Port Louis to pay their respects at the tomb of Blessed Father Jacques-Désiré Laval. Remembered for a lifetime of radical compassion, he remains one of the island’s most deeply revered spiritual figures, regardless of faith.

Usually arriving in August or September, Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birthday of Lord Ganesha with lively devotion. Processions of families carry handcrafted clay idols of the elephant-headed deity down to rivers, lakes and ocean shores, singing hymns before gently immersing them in the water.

Celebrated in October or November, Diwali sets the island aglow as thousands of earthen oil lamps and fairy lights turn neighbourhoods into starry nights. Families spend days swapping homemade sweets across garden walls, celebrating the ancient victory of light over darkness in what is arguably Mauritius’ most magical festival.

Falling right in the heart of warm summer on 25 December, Christmas in Mauritius blends traditional carols and midnight mass with a distinctly tropical lifestyle. Beachside gatherings, festive feasts and midnight fireworks merge seamlessly into a joyful holiday season that rolls right on through to the New Year.

The beaches here really live up to the hype. Most people arrive by catamaran, spend a few hours swimming in the calm lagoon, then relax on the soft white sand before heading back. It can get busy, but it is still one of the island’s best day trips. 

A short flight from Mauritius takes you to Rodrigues, where life moves at a much slower pace. The island feels less developed, with quiet beaches, rugged scenery and giant tortoises among its best-known attractions. It is a great escape if you have got an extra day or two.

This is one of the easiest wildlife attractions to enjoy, especially if you are travelling with children. The giant Aldabra tortoises are the main draw, but there are also Nile crocodiles, monkeys and other animals spread across the park.

After exploring Port Louis, it is a pleasant place to slow down for a while. There are cafés  overlooking the marina, local shops to browse and plenty of benches where you can simply watch the harbour and the boats coming and going.

Exploring the city’s food scene with a local guide is one of the best ways to experience everyday Mauritian culture. Along the way, you will stop for favourites such as dholl puri, rotis and freshly made boulettes while hearing the stories behind each neighbourhood.

Every stretch of coastline has its own character. Flic en Flac is known for its sunsets, Trou aux Biches is perfect for calm swimming, and there are plenty of quieter beaches where it is easy to spend a few relaxed hours by the water.
