Before the first safari vehicles appear, hot-air balloons rise quietly over the Maasai Mara. From above, the landscape stretches for miles, with elephants, giraffes and during the migration season, huge herds of wildebeest moving across the plains. The silence up there is part of what makes the experience so memorable. 

Most trekkers aim for Point Lenana, setting off in the dark to reach the summit by sunrise. The final climb can feel tough because of the altitude, but the first light spilling across the peaks and glaciers is a reward in itself. Routes such as Sirimon and Chogoria offer very different scenery along the way.

There aren’t many national parks where you can cycle past wildlife instead of watching it through a vehicle window. Hell’s Gate is one of them. It is not unusual to spot zebras grazing beside the track of giraffes wandering across the open plains, with steep volcanic cliffs rising in the background.

Watamu’s protected reefs are home to colourful coral gardens, reef fish and green sea turtles. Visibility is often excellent during the calmer months, making the park a favourite for both experienced divers and people trying snorkelling for the first time.

The Tana River has a habit of keeping you guessing. Calm stretches drift through the quiet countryside before the water suddenly gathers speed and the rapids take over. It is a full day’s adventure that mixes scenery with plenty of excitement. 

The flight alone offers sweeping views of Diani’s white-sand coastline and the turquoise Indian Ocean. Once the jump begins, the shoreline seems to rush towards you before the parachute opens and everything slows again. On a clear day, the view is spectacular from start to finish.

Standing above Mombasa’s Old Port, Fort Jesus has witnessed Portuguese rule, Omani occupation and the arrival of the British. Cannon openings still face the sea, a reminder that this was built as a military fortress, not a monument. Today it is recognised by UNESCO for its exceptional historical value.

The easiest way to explore Lamu is simply to wander. Its narrow lanes twist between coral-stone houses, carved wooden doors and tiny courtyards where daily life carries on much as it has for centuries. The town is one of East Africa’s oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlements and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The farmhouse made famous by Out of Africa sits at the foot of the Ngong Hills, away from Nairobi’s busy centre. Walking through its rooms gives a more personal picture of colonial Kenya than most history books, with original furnishings and photographs still on display.

At first glance, the dry-stone walls seem surprisingly simple. Looking closer, it is hard not to wonder how such a large settlement was built without mortar centuries ago. The site preserves a rare style of traditional stone architecture that later earned UNESCO recognition.

The windswept corner of northern Kenya rarely appears on first-time itineraries, yet it is one of the most important archaeological landscapes in the world. Fossils uncovered here have transformed what we know about early human ancestors, making the Lake Turkana region internationally significant.

You will notice the scent of acacia wood smoke the moment you step past the red shúkàs and into a clay manyatta. Everyone knows the high-jumping adumu dance, but true Maasai life is quieter, grounded in cattle, family, and the complex mathematical beadwork grandmothers teach their daughters.

Lamu completely ignores modern clocks. There are zero cars here; you just hear donkey hooves on stone alleyways and dhows creaking in the harbour. It is a centuries-old mix of Africa, Persian, and Arabic roots that you can instantly feel through the massive, carved teak doors and the smell of cardamom coffee.

If you want a quick crash course on the whole country, Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi is the spot. It is an interactive exhibit rather than an organic village, but walking through the life-sized replicas of homesteads from different tribes is fascinating. The highlight is the arena where dancers and drummers from all over Kenya put on a massive, high-energy show.

Living around the windswept Lake Turkana, the Jade Sea is tough, and the Turkana people meet that harsh northern heat with incredible style. They wear heavy, stacked layers of bright neck beads and vibrant woven clothes. Their history isn’t written down; it is kept alive through songs and an intense dedication to their livestock.

Up in the misty highlands of Central Kenya around Mount Kenya, the red volcanic soil shapes everything. Towns are growing fast and technology is everywhere, but the community stays grounded through old family milestones, the yearly harvest cycles and deep-rooted stories about their sacred mountain.  

Tucked away in the coastal canopy of Kenya’s coast, far from the beach resorts, these UNESCO-protected groves are not tourist traps. They are active, silent sanctuaries. Mijikenda elders still come here to perform sacred rituals, protecting these forests just as their ancestors did for centuries.

If you are in Kenya on 12 December, you will quickly realise it is more than another public holiday. Nairobi hosts the official parade, but across the rest of the country the day belongs to families, neighbourhood celebrations, music and plenty of nyama choma shared with friends.

1 June marks the day Kenya gained internal self-rule. The official ceremonies are televised nationwide, although for many Kenyans it is simply a welcome day off, with parks, beaches and restaurants noticeably busier than usual.

By May or June, Loiyangalani becomes one of the country’s most colourful gathering places. Communities from northern Kenya come together to share traditional dances, songs, crafts and food, creating an event that is as much about preserving culture as celebrating it. 

The pace of Lamu changes every November. Dhows crowd the waterfront, donkey races weave through the old town and the narrow echo with Swahili music, poetry and conversations that continue well into the evening.

Every August, Maralal attracts experienced camel riders, first-timers and curious spectators in equal measure. Between the races, there is time to wander local markets, watch Samburu performances and enjoy an event that feels refreshingly laid-back despite the competition.

Come March, Naivasha takes on a completely different atmosphere. Rally fans camp beside the stages days before the first cars appear, roadside grills stay busy from morning until night and the weekend feels more like a huge outdoor gathering than a motorsport event.

From around ten days in January or February, many of Nairobi’s restaurants serve specially curated menus at fixed prices. Tables at the most popular spots disappear quickly, so booking ahead is almost always worthwhile.

The Maulidi Festival follows the Islamic calendar, so the dates change each year. In Lamu, it is a deeply important religious occasion, with prayers, poetry, dhow races and community gatherings bringing together residents and pilgrims from across East Africa.

Friday evenings in Westlands feel completely different from a quiet weekday afternoon. Rooftop bars fill up, DJs switch between Afrobeats, Gengetone and Amapiano, while the smell of nyama choma drifts from restaurants that stay busy long after midnight.

The beach doesn’t empty once the sun sets. Travellers linger over grilled seafood, live bands play at beachfront venues and smaller bars keep things relaxed with acoustic music instead of loud club nights. Some evenings end around a bonfire with the sound of waves in the background.

Rhino Charge is less about polished racing than determination. Drivers crawl over rocks, through mud and across rough countryside in vehicles built to survive punishment rather than look good. Every year, the event also raises millions for wildlife conservation across Kenya.

The camel races may be the headline attraction, but they are only part of the weekend. Markets, traditional performances and local food bring together visitors, Samburu communities and competitors, giving the event the feel of a genuine regional celebration rather than a sporting fixture alone.

Some visitors come for the fossils and end up wandering into an art exhibition or cultural event instead. The museum changes throughout the year, so there is usually something happening beyond the permanent galleries, whether it is a photography display, a workshop or a public talk. 

No two visits are ever quite the same because the market moves around Nairobi during the week. One stall might be selling hand-carved wooden animals, the next colourful beadwork or paintings. Bargaining is expected, and friendly conversation is often part of the experience as much as the shopping itself.
