Travel Advice and Safety

Travelling to Peru is generally safe, especially if you are planning your visit to the main Gringo Trail, featuring Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu. For immediate assistance in Peru, you can use these national numbers, mostly available 24/7.

Emergency numbers

Police 105
Fire Department 106
Ambulance 116

Peru is safe for visitors who take standard precautions in cities and common sense on the road. Violent crime against tourists is not the primary risk, sophisticated petty theft, taxi scams and express kidnapping in Lima are the most consistent concerns. The Cusco and Sacred Valley corridor is well-policed during tourist season. Altitude sickness is arguably a more likely disruption to most trips than crime, particularly for visitors who fly directly to Cusco from Lima without acclimatisation time.

Key Safety Considerations

  • Altitude Sickness: Cusco and Rainbow Mountain are incredibly high, so rest for two days and consider speaking to your doctor before travelling.

  • Express Kidnappings: Lima has serious issues with express kidnappings, so never hail street taxis and use safe apps like Uber or Cabify.

  • Protests and Blockades: Political strikes can quickly block major roads to Machu Picchu, meaning you should always build flexibility into your travel itinerary.

  • Fake Ticket Scams: Fraudulent websites sell fake Machu Picchu passes, so buy yours exclusively from the official site, culturacusco.gob.pe, to avoid rejection.

  • Food and Water: Never drink Peruvian tap water, and stick to busy, licensed markets when trying Lima's famous street food and fresh ceviche.

Local Laws & Culture

  • Disrespectful behaviour at cultural, historical or sacred sites is a criminal offence in Peru. You can be detained and fined for climbing structures or removing stones.

  • Removing pre-Columbian, even fragments is a serious criminal offence. Reproductions are legal to export , but must be accompanied by documentation from a reputable dealer.

  • Drugs laws are enforced seriously in Peru. Possession of illegal substances carries lengthy prison sentences.

  • Refrain from photographing military personnel, police officers, military installations, or government buildings. At some indigenous markets or ceremonies, ask before you click.

  • Shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed inside the churches or religious sites. Modest clothing is a must.
