Phsar Leu feels worlds away from the souvenir stalls near Pub Street. Local shoppers come for produce, dried fish, household goods, jewellery and clothing, creating a dense, noisy maze. Visit in the morning, carry small riel notes and ask before photographing individual vendors.

The wheel quickly exposes how difficult pottery really is. At Khmer Ceramics and Fine Arts Centre, an instructor helps you shape Angkor-inspired clay before adding carved decoration. Your finished piece becomes a more personal souvenir, even if its curves remain charmingly less than symmetrical.

Lotus Silk Farm shows how fine thread can be drawn from stems usually left behind after harvest. You can watch artisans spin fibre, weave textiles and turn remaining material into paper or incense. A practical workshop makes the ingenuity easier to appreciate than observation alone.

At the Institute for Khmer Traditional Textiles, silk production begins with mulberry trees, silkworms and natural dyes rather than a showroom. Workshop visits explain the ikat process and its post-war revival. The newly opened museum adds historic fabrics and weaving tools to that living story.

Wat Damnak combines a Buddhist monastery with the Center for Khmer Studies, whose library specialises in Cambodia and Southeast Asia. Wander respectfully through the grounds, then browse the collection or check for talks and screenings. It is a pause from sightseeing built around spectacle.

During Khmer New Year, Siem Reap fills with traditional games, music, dancing and enthusiastic water fights. Celebrations usually run for three days in mid-April, drawing large domestic crowds. Book your room and transfers early, then protect phones and cameras from the inevitable soaking.

Bon Om Touk follows the seasonal change in the Tonlé Sap system, landing around November’s full moon. Along the Siem Reap River, boat races, food stalls and crowds create a carnival mood quite different from Phnom Penh’s celebration; exact dates follow the lunar calendar.

Twice each year, around March and September, sunrise appears directly above Angkor Wat’s central tower. The alignment attracts thousands before dawn, transforming a quiet silhouette into a communal spectacle. Reach the western causeway early if you want an unobstructed view and a steady camera position.

Siem Reap’s Giant Puppet Parade sends huge, illuminated creatures through the city, accompanied by musicians and young performers. Pub Street is Siem Reap at its loudest: neon signs, competing playlists, inexpensive drinks and a steady flow of travellers. The main strip suits dancing and people-watching, while neighbouring lanes hide smaller cocktail bars and live music. Your best evening may happen one street away.

Barcode’s nightly transformist show is all costume changes, lip-syncing, dance and knowing humour, delivered in a welcoming LGBTQ+ bar. Entry is usually free, although ordering drinks supports the performers and venue. Sit near the stage if you enjoy playful audience interaction; further back is calmer.

A rotation on Angkor Eye lifts you above Siem Reap for views over rooftops, countryside and distant tree lines. Sunset brings the most flattering colour, though cloud can soften the horizon during the wet season. The enclosed gondolas make the ride manageable even for cautious visitors.
