Sardinia’s rocky interior is cut by gorges, waterfalls and natural pools that make canyoning one of the island’s more adventurous activities. Visitors can move through narrow limestone landscapes and water-carved channels, seeing parts of Sardinia that are difficult to experience from ordinary walking routes.

During the Middle Ages, Sardinia was divided into independent kingdoms known as giudicati, each with its own rulers and political centres. Visitors can trace this period through churches, castles and historic towns that reveal a chapter of Sardinian history very different from the island’s ancient past.

From the 14th century onwards, Aragonese and later Spanish rule left a lasting mark on Sardinia’s cities, fortifications, language and religious traditions. Visitors can still see this influence particularly clearly in places such as Alghero, Cagliari and several historic coastal settlements.

Canto a tenore is a traditional form of Sardinian polyphonic singing performed by four male voices in a close circle. Rooted in pastoral culture, it remains especially associated with Barbagia and central Sardinia and is recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Sardinia’s carnival traditions include striking masks and costumes linked with villages such as Mamoiada, Ottana and Orotelli. Visitors may encounter Mamuthones, Merdules and other figures whose performances combine bells, animal imagery and ritual movements rooted in older local traditions.

Handwoven textiles remain one of Sardinia’s most recognisable crafts, with carpets, rugs and decorative fabrics produced using patterns that vary between communities. Visitors can see how weaving traditions continue through workshops and artisan centres where older techniques are still passed between generations.

The launeddas is a traditional Sardinian reed instrument made from three pipes played together using circular breathing. Its distinctive sound accompanies dances, processions and community celebrations, giving visitors a different introduction to Sardinia’s musical heritage from the better-known canto a tenore tradition.

Shepherding has shaped life across inland Sardinia for generations, influencing food, music, festivals and rural customs. Visitors can still see this heritage reflected in central villages, traditional dishes and community celebrations where pastoral identity remains closely connected with the landscape.

Held from 1 to 4 May each year, Cagliari’s Feast of Sant’Efisio is one of Sardinia’s most important traditional celebrations. The procession brings together people in traditional dress, horsemen, musicians and religious groups as the saint’s statue travels from Cagliari towards Nora.

Held in Sassari during May, the Cavalcata Sarda celebrates Sardinian traditions through colourful costumes, folk music, dancing and impressive equestrian displays. Groups from across the island gather for one of Sardinia’s largest secular celebrations of regional culture and identity.

Time in Jazz brings live music to Berchidda and surrounding communities in northern Sardinia during the summer months. Founded by Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, the festival combines jazz performances with atmospheric venues across villages, churches and countryside settings.

Taking place in Oristano during the Carnival period, Sartiglia is one of Sardinia’s most distinctive traditional celebrations. Costumed horsemen take part in ceremonial processions and impressive equestrian displays, bringing together medieval traditions, skilled horsemanship and the cultural identity of western Sardinia.

During the autumn months, Autunno in Barbagia brings villages across central Sardinia to life with traditional food, crafts, costumes and open houses. Visitors can travel between participating communities, with each village showcasing its own local products, customs and cultural traditions.

Held during the Carnival season, Mamoiada’s celebrations are famous for the Mamuthones and Issohadores. Their masked processions fill the village with bells, traditional costumes and ritual movement, offering visitors a fascinating look at one of inland Sardinia’s most recognisable cultural traditions.

Poetto changes character after sunset, with beach bars and kiosks stretching along the waterfront between Cagliari and Quartu Sant’Elena. Visitors can move between casual drinks, live music and DJ sets while keeping the sea in view throughout the evening.

Alghero has one of Sardinia’s most atmospheric evening settings, with bars and restaurants filling the medieval centre before activity moves towards the waterfront and beach venues. Visitors can combine sunset drinks on the bastions with a livelier night around the Riviera del Corallo.

San Teodoro is one of the island’s livelier nightlife areas, with clubs and music venues attracting a younger summer crowd. Visitors looking for a later night will find DJ-led evenings and dancing concentrated around the resort and nearby coastal venues.

Costa Smeralda has Sardinia’s most polished nightlife scene, with stylish bars, beach venues and clubs set around the Gallura coastline. Visitors can begin with aperitivo by the sea before moving on to music and late-night venues with a more glamorous atmosphere.

Summer brings outdoor film screenings to public spaces around Cagliari, creating a relaxed alternative to bars and clubs. Visitors can watch Sardinian, Italian and international films beneath the night sky while experiencing some of the city’s historic spaces after dark.

Cagliari’s Marina district becomes lively after dark, with restaurants, wine bars and small venues filling the narrow streets between the port and historic centre. Visitors can move easily between dinner, drinks and late-night spots without leaving the heart of the city.
