Büyükada’s outer roads follow stretches of coastline lined with pine-covered slopes and historic wooden mansions. With most motor traffic restricted, visitors can cycle beyond the busy ferry terminal and see a noticeably quieter side of Istanbul.

A popular six-kilometre route winds through Belgrad Forest, passing streams, woodland and historic reservoirs once linked to Istanbul’s water supply. Visitors can walk or run the trail while seeing a greener side of the city rarely associated with its historic centre.

Aydos Forest offers both gentle walks around Aydos Pond and steeper routes towards 537-metre Aydos Hill, Istanbul’s highest point. Visitors taking the uphill route are rewarded with elevated views, while those staying near the water can hire pedal boats.

Kemerburgaz Forest is home to a large outdoor activity park with zip-lines, rope courses, climbing walls and free-jump challenges. Visitors looking for something more energetic can move through different courses while remaining surrounded by woodland rather than an indoor adventure centre.

Black Sea winds make Kilyos one of Istanbul’s stronger spots for windsurfing and kiteboarding, particularly around Burç Beach. Visitors can spend time on the water before switching to swimming, beach volleyball or the surrounding beach-club scene.

Built in the early fifth century under Emperor Theodosius II, the land walls once protected Constantinople with layered defences, towers and ditches. Visitors can follow surviving sections through neighbourhoods such as Edirnekapı and Yedikule, where the fortifications still shape the streetscape.

At the southern end of the city walls, Yedikule incorporates the Roman-era Golden Gate, once used for imperial ceremonial entrances. Later expanded by the Ottomans, the fortress became associated with imprisonment and state power. Visitors can explore its towers, walls and large inner courtyard.

Beside the old city walls in Ayvansaray, Tekfur Palace is one of Istanbul’s rare surviving Byzantine palace structures. Its alternating brick and stone façade immediately stands out, while visitors can explore the restored building and exhibitions connected with the site’s later ceramic and tile-making history.

Originally part of the 12th-century Pantokrator Monastery, Zeyrek Mosque combines three former Byzantine church buildings within one complex. Visitors can see layers of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture here, while the surrounding Zeyrek neighbourhood forms part of Istanbul’s UNESCO-listed Historic Areas.

Originally the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, this sixth-century Byzantine building sits in a quieter residential part of the Historic Peninsula. Visitors can step inside its intimate domed interior and courtyard, experiencing a surviving Justinian-era monument away from Sultanahmet’s busiest landmarks.

Historic bathhouses preserve a ritual that once formed an important part of Ottoman social life. At traditional hamams, visitors move from the heated marble room to a kese exfoliation and foam wash, experiencing customs that extend well beyond an ordinary spa treatment.

The Mevlevi Sema is a spiritual ceremony built around whirling, symbolic clothing and music led by instruments such as the ney flute. At venues such as Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi, visitors can watch the ceremony accompanied by traditional instruments including the ney, kudüm and rebab.

Coffeehouses have been part of Istanbul life since the 16th century, when they became gathering places for conversation, literature and news. Visitors can still drink slowly brewed coffee from small cups, traditionally served with water, with fortune-reading from the remaining grounds adding another cultural ritual.

Traditional meyhanes turn dinner into a long, shared evening built around small plates of meze, seasonal fish and often rakı. Visitors will find this culture particularly visible in Beyoğlu and Kadıköy, where tables spill into side streets and music frequently accompanies the meal.

Ebru artists float pigments across thickened water before transferring the resulting patterns onto paper, meaning no two pieces are exactly alike. Visitors can encounter the UNESCO-listed craft through workshops and demonstrations, learning how brushes, colour and controlled movement create its distinctive marbled designs.

Each April, millions of tulips transform parks including Emirgan Grove, Gülhane Park and Göztepe 60th Year Park. Visitors can walk through large-scale floral displays while seasonal concerts and activities add to a tradition closely linked with Istanbul’s Ottoman-era love of tulips.

Held each spring, the Istanbul Film Festival screens international releases, new Turkish cinema, documentaries, shorts and retrospective programmes across city cinemas. Visitors can also attend filmmaker talks and special screenings, with the Golden Tulip Competition forming one of the festival’s central strands.

The Istanbul Music Festival brings orchestras, soloists and chamber ensembles into both concert halls and unusual historic settings each June. Visitors may hear performances inside churches, parks and cultural venues, with programmes also featuring commissioned works and occasional world premieres.

Running from late June into July, the Istanbul Jazz Festival extends beyond conventional concert halls into parks and even the Bosphorus. Visitors can choose between headline international artists, free Jazz in the Parks performances and the Jazz Boat sailing from Kabataş.

Usually held in autumn, the Istanbul Marathon starts on the Asian side before crossing the 15 July Martyrs Bridge into Europe. Visitors participating in the race get the rare opportunity to cross the Bosphorus bridge on foot while running between two continents.

Facing Taksim Square, the Atatürk Cultural Centre houses a 2,040-seat opera hall alongside a dedicated theatre. Visitors can book performances ranging from Istanbul State Opera and Ballet productions to concerts and touring shows, all beneath the building’s distinctive red spherical auditorium.

Zorlu PSM runs a year-round programme spanning international concerts, musicals, theatre, stand-up, dance and smaller live shows across several stages. Visitors can move from large-scale productions in the main halls to more intimate performances at venues such as touché and Vestel Amp.

Hidden on a side street near Galata Tower, Nardis is an intimate club built around live jazz rather than a general nightlife crowd. Visitors sit close to the stage for performances by Turkish and international musicians, with the programme changing throughout the week.

After sunset, dinner cruises turn the Bosphorus into a moving evening venue, passing illuminated sights such as Ortaköy Mosque and the waterfront palaces. Visitors can combine dinner with Turkish folk performances, dance shows and music while sailing between Istanbul’s European and Asian shores.

A Galatasaray home match brings visitors into one of Istanbul’s most intense sporting atmospheres, with packed stands, coordinated chants and yellow-and-red displays at RAMS Park. Fixtures run through the Turkish league season, making advance ticket planning particularly important for major matches.
