Visa Information

British citizens can currently travel to Malaysia without applying for a tourist visa in advance for stays of up to 90 days. Entry permission is granted by immigration authorities on arrival.

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival into Malaysia. Some airlines may deny boarding if your passport validity falls below this requirement.

Things to Do

From rainforest trekking and island hopping to colonial history and world-class street food, your Malaysian adventure awaits.

Adventure

Discover Malaysia's thrilling jungle treks, mountain climbs, and world-class diving for a truly tropical, action-packed adventure in Malaysia.

History

Malay sultanates, then Portuguese, then Dutch and British rule; Malaysia’s history runs through the trading ports that drew the world here.

Events

Malaysia’s calendar is busy with cultural and religious festivals in 2026 and timing your visit around one adds a real colour.

Entertainment

Rooftop bars, theme parks, night markets, and serious shopping means Malaysia, and Kuala Lumpur especially, knows to fill an evening.

Top Attractions in Malaysia

These are the places most first-time visitors build a Malaysia trip around. A strong itinerary usually links a city, an island or beach, and a slice of rainforest or highland.

What to Eat in Malaysia

Honestly, Malaysian food is arguably the best in Asia because it’s this wild, delicious mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian flavors.

Nasi Lemak

It’s the unofficial national dish for a reason. You get coconut rice, hard-boiled egg, peanuts, anchovies, and a killer sambal.

Roti Canai

This is the ultimate comfort food. It’s a super flaky, buttery flatbread that you rip apart and dunk into dhal or curry.

Char Kway Teow

Find a stall where the chef is tossing flat rice noodles, prawns, and Chinese sausage over a massive flame to give it a smoky wok hei flavor.

Satay

Smoky, charred skewers of chicken or beef. The real star here is the thick, sweet peanut dipping sauce that comes with it.

Penang Assam Laksa

It’s a sour, tangy, fishy noodle soup loaded with tamarind, mint, and pineapple. You’ll either love it or be totally confused by it.

Nasi Kandar

A mountain of rice where you choose your meats and veggies, and flood the plate with a mix of different curries (ask for "banjir"). Penang does this best.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

The poached chicken is great, but the real magic is the rice itself, which is cooked right in the chicken fat and stock.

Beef Rendang

This isn't a quick stir-fry. It’s beef slow-cooked in coconut milk and spices for hours until the meat literally falls apart.

Bak Kut Teh

A herbal, deeply peppery pork rib broth. It sounds heavy, but locals love eating this steaming hot bowl first thing in the morning.

Cendol

When the afternoon heat hits, find a roadside cart selling this. It’s shaved ice drenched in coconut milk, rich palm sugar (gula Melaka), and green jelly noodles.

What to Pack for Malaysia

Malaysia is hot and humid every month, with the odd cool spot in the highlands. Pack light, pack breathable, and leave room for the rain.

Clothing

  • Lightweight, breathable, cotton or linen for hot, humid days

  • A lighter jumper or fleece for the Cameron highlands, Genting and fierce air conditioning

  • A few longer skirts, trousers, or tops for mosques, temples and conservative areas

  • A light rain jacket or a compact umbrella, useful in any month

  • Swimwear, plus a cover up for walking between beach and resort

  • Smart-casual outfit for bars and restaurants

Footwear

  • Comfortable walking shoes or trainers for cities and heritage trails

  • Sandals or flip flops for the beaches and casual days

  • Sturdy trail shoes or hiking boots if you plan to trek or climb

  • Water shoes for rocky island beaches and river activities

Sun & Skin Essentials

  • High-factor sun cream, as the UV index is extreme here all year

  • Sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat

Tips for Visiting Malaysia

  • Keep the cash handy in Malaysia for street food, local markets, and rural areas.

  • Sims such as Celcom and Maxis offer the best coverage; available at the airports.

  • Use Grab App for taxis, they are safe, and saves you from overpaying.

  • If using trains (KTMB); use their official app to book especially on long distances.

  • Dress modestly while you are visiting rural areas or religious sites.

  • Family and personal dignity are central to Malaysian society.

  • Public confrontations are considered social errors; maintain a calm demeanor and avoid shouting.

  • Refrain from public displays of affection, particularly when visiting more conservative rural areas.

  • Respect personal boundaries by not touching anyone's head during a conversation.

  • Always utilize your right hand when exchanging items.

  • Be mindful that some individuals, particularly Muslim women, may prefer not to shake hands with those of a different gender.

  • Allow others to initiate a handshake; otherwise, a polite bow with your hand over your heart is a suitable greeting.

  • Bringing a small token of appreciation is advised for initial meetings.

  • Avoid giving alcohol or any pig-skin products to Malays.

Travel Advice and Safety

Is it Safe to Travel to Malaysia

Yes, absolutely. It's actually one of the easiest countries in Southeast Asia to travel through. Your biggest headache is going to be petty crime - watch your bag in Kuala Lumpur because snatch-and-grab thieves on motorbikes are common. Use Grab to get around (it’s cheap and saves you dealing with shady taxi drivers). The only real 'no-go' zone is the eastern coast of Sabah because of piracy/kidnapping risks, but the rest of the country is completely fine.

Key Safety Considerations

Here’s the straight truth on staying safe in Malaysia:

  • Watch the bag snatchers: Motorbike thieves in KL and Penang love grabbing bags from pedestrians. Walk away from the curb and keep your bag on the inside shoulder

  • Ditch regular taxis: Street drivers are notorious for refusing meters and ripping off tourists. Just use Grab, it’s cheap, safe and saves you the headache.

  • Avoid Eastern Sabah: Skip the far eastern coast and islands of Sabah. There’s a legit risk of piracy and kidnappings there. The rest of the country is completely fine.

  • Strictest drug laws ever: Seriously, don’t mess around with drugs here. Possession carries massive jail time, and trafficking still gets the death penalty.

  • Card Skimming: Keep your credit card in sight when paying, and only use ATMs located inside actual bank branches to avoid rigged machines.

Local Laws & Culture

  • Same-sex activity is illegal under Malaysian law, so LGBT travellers should be aware of local laws.

  • Always remove your shoes before entering homes, mosques, and temples.

  • Use your right hand for eating, and for exchanging items wherever you can.

  • Dress modestly at religious sites, covering your shoulders and knees.

  • During Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking in public during daylight hours out of respect.

  • Insulting Islam, the royal family, or any religion can be a criminal offence.

  • Keep public displays of affection modest, particularly in more conservative states.

  • Alcohol is legal but taxed heavily, so drink sensibly and not in the street.

  • Do not point with your index finger, as it is rude. Use your thumb or an open hand.

  • Littering, jaywalking, and smoking in banned areas can all attract on-the-spot fines.
