Overview

Luxury holidays in Cambodia? Yes, you read that right. This offbeat destination, not often considered for luxury travel, hides incredible experiences you’ll be shouting about from the rooftops. An underrated gem of Asia, Cambodia is an exotic destination with a captivating history and that big-heart Asian hospitality. You can expect your holidays in Cambodia to be nothing less than enthralling. Its majestic temples, lush jungles, pristine beaches, and exciting flavours are just some of the things you can look forward to. Expertly combining outdoor adventure with exquisite luxury experiences, Cambodia offers a variety of unique activities to fill your stay. Channel your inner adventurer exploring the UNESCO-protected jungle temples of Angkor, or hop on a breathtaking helicopter ride to see the magnitude of this ‘Lost City’ from above.

Discover the vibrant culture, explore colourful markets, taste the local fare, and learn how to recreate it at home. What may come as a surprise, Cambodia also has white sand beaches and crystalline waters that could give Thailand a run for its money. In the spirit of luxury holidays, Cambodia even spoils you with a tiny private island all to yourself. You most likely will be glued to your private pool, but if you do wish to mix it up, you can snorkel and scuba dive, kayak to nearby islands, or renew your energy with guided meditation. Read More

Famous For

Things to Do

Beyond Angkor's temples, you can cruise the floating villages of Tonlé Sap, eat fish amok in Phnom Penh's back lanes, and swim off Koh Rong's empty beaches.

Adventure

Cambodia offers a variety of adventures. One day you might be trekking in the jungle or exploring old temples, and the next you are relaxing on a quiet island or watching village life.

History

Walking through Cambodia feels like moving through different layers of time. You see ancient temples of the Khmer Empire, old French buildings, and memorial sites that reflect the Khmer Rouge period.

Culture

Some of the most interesting parts of Cambodian culture are the things you see every day, whether it is a krama scarf, a local temple, or a family meal.

Entertainment

The temples might be the main attraction, but the evenings have their own rhythm. You could be watching the acrobats at Phare one night and squeezing into a busy bar in Siem Reap the next.

Events

In Cambodia, festivals often take over daily life, with crowded riverfronts, busy temples, and families travelling home to celebrate together.

Top Attractions in Camodia

Most people arrive in Cambodia with Angkor Wat on their itinerary. A few days later, they are usually sitting by the river in Kampot, exploring Tonlé Sap by boat, or wondering why they didn't leave more time for the islands.

What to Eat

Some of the best meals in Cambodia are the simplest. A plate of grilled pork and rice, a bowl of noodle soup, or a fish curry wrapped in banana leaves can easily become the meal you remember the most.

Fish Amok

Rich coconut fish curry, usually steamed inside a banana leaf.

Beef Lok Lak

Stir-fried beef with rice, plus that addictive pepper-lime dip.

Nom Banh Chok

Morning rice noodles topped with fresh curry and fresh herbs.

Kampot Pepper Crab

Fresh crab cooked with Kampot pepper, the region's pride.

Bai Sach Chrouk

Grilled pork and rice, found at breakfast stalls everywhere.

Kuy Teav

A light noodle soup many Cambodians start the day with.

Khmer Barbecue

Part barbecue, part hotpot, cooked right at your table.

Lort Cha

Short rice noodles stir-fried in a wok, often with egg.

Num Pang

Cambodia’s answer to a baguette sandwich, packed with fillings.

Chet Chien

Small fried banana bites that disappear quickly in the mouth.

Facts about Cambodia

French colonial roots, a flag unlike any other, dolphins in the Mekong, and a river that literally flows backwards. Cambodia quietly surprises you.

  • Cambodia gained independence from France in 1953. Some French influence is still visible in its architecture and cuisine.

  • Officially, the country is known as the Kingdom of Cambodia.

  • Across Cambodia, Buddhism plays a major role everywhere from temples to local customs.

  • The Cambodian Riel is the national currency. US dollars are commonly accepted too.

  • Cambodia’s flag is the only national flag featuring a building: Angkor Wat.

  • Angkor Wat is the world’s largest religious monument.

  • Built by the Khmer Empire, the wider Angkor complex remains one of Southeast Asia’s greatest archaeological sites.

  • Tonlé Sap is Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. Around the lake, many communities live in floating villages.

  • Also, Tonlé Sap River is one of Cambodia’s stranger natural features, which reverses direction twice a year.

  • Khmer New Year is the country’s biggest celebration. You can expect traditional games, family gathering, and plenty of food during the festivities.

  • Fish Amok, a coconut-based curry, is widely regarded as Cambodia’s signature dish.

  • Rare Irrawaddy dolphins can still be spotted in parts of the Mekong.

Tips for Visiting Cambodia

Quick tips for Cambodia: sort your visa early, bring crisp dollars, dress for temples, and never trust rainy season travel times.

  • Check your passport before booking anything. You will need at least 6 months’ validity to travel to Cambodia.

  • Getting an e-visa beforehand usually makes arrival much smoother.

  • Don’t forget the e-Arrival Card. It is easy to complete online before flying.

  • Bring crisp US dollar notes. Even small tears can be a problem.

  • Picking up a local SIM card is cheap and saves a lot of frustration.

  • Keep small bills handy. They are useful for tuk-tuks, markets, and street food.

  • If Angkor Wat is on your list, get there at sunrise. You will beat the crowds and the worst heat.

  • Cambodia is hot for much of the year, so pack light clothing.

  • Pack sunscreen and mosquito repellent, especially if you will be spending time outdoors.

  • Stick to bottled or filtered water to avoid stomach problems.

  • Tuk-tuks are easy to find, but ride-hailing apps help avoid fare disputes.

  • Leave passports, extra cash, and valuables in your hotel safe when possible.

  • Keep bags away from the roadside, as phone and bag snatching can occur.

  • In rural areas, stay on marked paths due to unexploded wartime ordnance.

  • During the rainy season, journeys that look short on a map can take much longer.

  • Bargaining is common in markets, but a friendly approach to negotiate is always advisable.

  • Temples are active religious sites, not just tourist attractions, so dress respectfully.

  • Avoid attractions that allow direct contact with wild animals. Responsible sanctuaries are the better choice.

Is it Safe to Travel to Cambodia

Yes. Cambodia feels safe, welcoming, and day-to-day things are relaxed. In busy places like Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, just take care of your belongings, especially in tuk-tuks or crowded streets as snatching can happen. Also, don’t wander off into unknown rural or border areas on your own as some places still have old landmine risks. If you are going in the rainy season, plans can shift quickly, so stay flexible.

Key Safety Considerations

  • Some rural areas still have old mines lying around, so it is not advisable to explore off the main routes.

  • In cities like Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville, phone grabbing or someone snatching a bag is quite possible.

  • For getting around, stick to proper taxis, tuk-tuks, or ride-apps when you can. It saves you both hassle and random pricing issues.

  • At night, don’t wander alone in quiet or unfamiliar streets. Busy, well-lit areas are safer.

  • In bars, make sure not to leave your drink sitting around. Also, stay a bit cautious with cheap alcohol, as it is not worth the risk.

  • The rainy season (June to October) can mess with travel plans a bit, with flooding and delays coming into the picture.

  • Count your change when you are paying in cash.

  • Only swim where it actually looks safe or locals are doing it.

  • Choose proper, licensed operators for anything adventurous. It is usually safer and better organised.

  • Traffic can be a bit rough, so be careful on the roads. Always wear a helmet if you are on the road.

  • Keep your insurance and emergency contact handy. You don’t want to be searching for them if anything comes up.

  • Stay alert on local updates, especially during weather changes, since transport and flights can shift suddenly.

Local Laws and Culture

  • You will be expected to remove your shoes before entering temples and sometimes local homes.

  • Buddha statues are treated with great respect, so avoid climbing on them or posing inappropriately for photos.

  • If you are a woman, don’t touch monks or their robes. It is a strict religious custom.

  • Before photographing people, ask first. Most won’t mind, but it is considered polite.

  • Handing something over with both hands is seen as a sign of respect.

  • Avoid touching another person’s head. In Cambodian culture, it is considered the most sacred part of the body.

  • Be mindful of where you point your feet, particularly around people, shrines, and Buddha images.

  • Public displays of affection are uncommon, especially once you are away from major tourist areas.

  • Keeping your cool goes a long way. Public arguments and shouting are generally frowned upon.

  • Tipping isn’t part of the culture in the same way it is elsewhere, though it is always appreciated.

  • Whenever possible, spend your money with local businesses and responsible tourism operators.

  • Politics is best left alone as a visitor, particularly discussions involving the government or monarchy.

  • Leave military sites, government facilities, and security personnel out of your photographs.

  • Don’t assume cannabis is legal because you have seen “happy pizza” on a menu. It isn’t.

  • Carry a copy of your passport. It can save time if you are ever asked for identification.
