You don’t need to be deeply interested in the American Civil War to appreciate Richmond National Battlefield Park. Some battlefields remain unexpectedly quiet, with forest trails, open fields and very little noise beyond birds or passing wind. The visitor centres explain the campaigns clearly, though summer heat around the walking routes can feel surprisingly draining by midday.

If you’re over here in early June, definitely get down to Stratford Hall on the 6th or 7th. It’s the 250th anniversary of the Lee Resolution, basically the moment that triggered the split from the Crown. Saturday will be featuring a massive evening festival, food trucks, and huge fireworks. Sunday is much more chilled, with acoustic colonial music and historic re-enactors.

Standing on the beach hearing the traditional drumming, flutes, and ceremonial bells is incredibly powerful.

If you fancy a trip to the States this June, Norfolk is hosting something massive for America’s 250th. They are putting on a huge maritime festival, bringing in over 60 historic tall ships and navy vessels from across the globe. The big highlight is the Parade of Sail on Friday, June 19th, it is genuinely worth crossing the Atlantic to see.

Think you know what a military tattoo looks like? America’s version at Norfolk's Scope Arena is on an entirely different scale. This massive production brings together over 800 international performers, including incredible pipe bands and drill teams, to mark the US 250th anniversary. If you're a fan of Edinburgh's Tattoo, it is absolutely worth travelling for.

If you’re visiting Virginia in October from 16 to 19, make time for the Yorktown Victory Celebration. The town basically goes all out with live artillery firings, wreath-laying ceremonies, and massive living-history encampments. Check out the immersive programmes at the American Revolution Museum and watching the events of the 1781 siege brought to life right on its actual battlefield is a brilliant experience.

If you want to hear the true roots of American music, head to the southwest mountains. The driving route connects small-town venues and country stores where authentic bluegrass and old-time mountain music are played live every weekend.

Virginia isn’t just about the past. The capital, Richmond, is a modern cultural hub packed with world-class street murals, indie galleries, and a buzzing creative energy that stands in cool contrast to its historic battlefields.

Along the eastern coast, communities have lived off the water for generations. The unique maritime culture here, centred about crabbing, oystering, and historic wooden boats, gives the coast a wonderfully rugged, authentic character.

It’s a gorgeous, 1920s Italian Renaissance cinema turned indie music venue, complete with wooden floors and old brick walls. Because it only holds about 1,500 people, you get that brilliant, high-energy gig atmosphere but close enough to actually see the band.

Virginia Safari Park offers a completely different kind of family day out, where zebras, giraffes and llamas wander right beside your car as you drive through the park.
