Built in 1778, Puerta de Alcalá once marked one of the main entrances into Madrid. Charles III commissioned the gate from architect Francesco Sabatini. It is worth looking at both sides, as the carvings and decorative details are noticeably different.

Lhardy has been part of Madrid’s dining scene since the nineteenth century and still holds onto much of its old-fashioned character. Politicians, writers and members of high society once dined here, giving the restaurant a place in the city’s social history as well as its food culture.

Several of Spain’s most important historic places can be visited easily from Madrid. Toledo, Segovia and Ávila are all UNESCO-listed, while El Escorial is also recognised for its monastery and royal complex, making the capital a useful base for heritage-focused day trips.

Madrid’s Landscape of Light brings Paseo del Prado and El Retiro together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around the boulevard sit the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofía, giving visitors an unusually concentrated introduction to European and Spanish art.

The Prado Museum rewards a slower visit. Its galleries move through centuries of Spanish and European painting, with Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, Bosch and Rubens among the major names. The collection grew from Spain’s royal holdings and remains central to Madrid’s cultural identity.

Reina Sofía takes Madrid’s art story firmly into the modern era. Picasso, Dalí and Miró feature prominently, while Guernica gives the museum its emotional centre. The setting makes a natural counterpart to the Prado, especially for visitors interested in twentieth-century Spain.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza fills many of the gaps between Madrid’s two larger art museums, moving across European styles and periods in an approachable way. Its position on the Paseo del Arte makes it easy to combine with the Prado and Reina Sofía.

Matadero Madrid gives the city’s cultural scene a more contemporary edge. The former slaughterhouse beside the Manzanares has been reworked into a broad arts complex, with spaces for theatre, cinema, literature, exhibitions and concerts rather than a single traditional museum experience.

CaixaForum Madrid is worth visiting as much for the building as for its changing programme. The cultural centre hosts temporary exhibitions and events, while its striking vertical garden and contemporary interior make it an easy stop along the city’s wider art route.

Flamenco in Madrid is best experienced at close range, where the footwork, guitar and singing carry the evening without much decoration. Smaller venues can feel especially immediate, while classes offer another way to understand the rhythm and physical discipline behind the performance.

Gran Vía rarely feels quiet. During the day, shoppers fill the pavements; after dark, theatre signs, cinemas and rooftop terraces take over. Buildings such as the Metrópolis and Telefónica are part of the experience too, so it is worth occasionally looking up.

Facing the Royal Palace across Plaza de Oriente, Teatro Real is Madrid’s main opera house and one of the city’s best-known performance venues. Its programme includes opera, concerts and other major productions. Even without a performance booked, its position beside the Royal Palace makes it difficult to miss.

Football is woven into Madrid life, particularly when Real Madrid or Atlético Madrid are playing at home. A match brings the full noise and rivalry of the city into one place. Outside match days, both clubs offer stadium experiences for visiting supporters.

Madrid serves drinks in two very different ways. Rooftops around the centre fill as the sun drops, while traditional tabernas keep things simpler with wine, vermouth and small plates. It is common for an evening to include a little of both.

Malasaña and Chueca sit close together, but evenings in each feel different. Malasaña leans towards smaller bars, music venues and busy neighbourhood squares. Chueca is more polished in places, with restaurants, cocktail bars and clubs keeping its streets active well into the night.

Sunday morning changes the feel of La Latina completely as El Rastro spreads through its streets. The market is a jumble of antiques, second-hand goods, clothes and unexpected finds. Browsing usually spills naturally into the neighbourhood’s bars once lunchtime approaches.

San Isidro is Madrid’s biggest traditional celebration, held in honour of the city’s patron saint on 15 May. Locals gather at Pradera de San Isidro for picnics, chotis dancing and rosquillas, while concerts and celebrations take place across the capital.

Madrid Pride is one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations, with much of the activity centred around Chueca. Concerts, parties and cultural events run across the city, leading up to the huge Pride parade, which traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in July.

Mad Cool has become one of Madrid’s biggest music weekends since launching in 2016. Held during the summer, it draws major international acts across rock, pop, indie and alternative music, with several stages and four days of performances at Iberdrola Music.

For several weeks around late spring and early summer, part of El Retiro becomes an enormous outdoor bookshop. Madrid Book Fair brings together publishers, booksellers and authors from across Spain, with signings, talks and hundreds of stalls lining Paseo de Fernán Núñez.

Madrid Carnival takes place in the days leading up to Lent, so its dates change each year. Expect costumes, street performances, music and traditional events, finishing with the wonderfully peculiar Burial of the Sardine on Ash Wednesday.

August sees three old neighbourhood celebrations follow one another through Embajadores, Lavapiés and La Latina. San Cayetano and San Lorenzo start the festivities, before La Paloma takes over the streets. Its main celebration falls on 15 August, with music, dancing and traditional dress.

On 31 December, Puerta del Sol became the centre of Madrid’s New Year celebrations. Thousands gather beneath the Casa de Correos clock and eat twelve grapes with the twelve midnight chimes, a Spanish tradition said to bring good luck for the year ahead.

The evening of 5 January is one of Madrid’s biggest family celebrations. Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar travel through the city in a large parade of illuminated floats, performers and music, traditionally finishing at Plaza de Cibeles before Three Kings’ Day.
