The Harbour Circle follows a 13-kilometre walking and cycling route around Copenhagen's waterfront, linking busy central areas with Christianshavn and Sydhavn. Visitors do not need to complete the entire loop, as bridges make it easy to shorten the route or cross between different parts of the harbour.

Islands Brygge brings open-air swimming close to central Copenhagen, with five pools and diving towers beside the waterfront. Water quality is checked by the authorities, and swimming is only permitted when conditions are approved. Visitors should stay within official harbour baths and designated bathing zones.

Kalvebod Bølge extends the waterfront out into the harbour through raised platforms, activity areas and pools. Kayaking is one of the sports accommodated here, with kayak storage, a kayak slide and rental available. It gives visitors an active way to use a stretch of harbour once dominated by offices.

Around five kilometres from the city centre, Amager Beach Park has 4.6 kilometres of beach and a sheltered lagoon. Kayaking and windsurfing are particularly popular in summer, while the promenade, sandy beach and open spaces make the area equally suitable for visitors after a slower day outdoors.

Four architecturally matching palaces surround Amalienborg Square, forming the main royal complex in Copenhagen. Visitors can enter the Amalienborg Museum and see the changing of the Royal Guard, which takes place at noon after the guards march through the city from their barracks near Rosenborg Castle..

Christian IV had Rosenborg Castle built between 1606 and 1634 as a royal pleasure palace. Inside, visitors move through rooms containing centuries of royal objects, while the basement holds the Danish Crown Jewels and Royal Regalia, making the compact castle particularly rich in original royal collections.

Christiansborg has an unusual dual role at the centre of Danish public life. The palace houses the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court and Ministry of State, while rooms are still used for royal functions. Beneath the present building, visitors can see ruins dating back to Bishop Absalon's castle of 1167.

Built under Christian IV and completed in 1642, the Round Tower is known for the broad spiral ramp winding through much of its interior. The building retains its connection with astronomy through its observatory, while visitors reaching the upper level get wide views across Copenhagen's rooftops.

The Citadel, or Kastellet, was founded by Christian IV in 1626 and remains one of Copenhagen's best-preserved fortifications. Military buildings are still in use inside the star-shaped complex, but the ramparts are open to visitors and have become a peaceful route for walking and running.

The National Museum gives visitors a much wider historical context than the city's palaces alone. Collections cover subjects including the Viking Age, the Middle Ages and everyday Danish life, allowing several periods of national history to be followed in one central museum.

Designmuseum Danmark traces Danish and international design through furniture, decorative arts and changing exhibitions. Its permanent Danish Modern exhibition focuses on Danish design from the 1920s to 2000, giving visitors useful context for the furniture and objects that helped shape Denmark's international design reputation.

SMK is Denmark's largest art gallery, with Danish and international works spanning more than seven centuries. Visitors can move from Danish Golden Age painting to older European art and modern collections, although individual galleries or works may change as exhibitions and collection displays are updated.

Founded in 1897 by brewer Carl Jacobsen, Glyptoteket combines ancient and modern art with one of Copenhagen's most recognisable museum interiors. Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Danish and French collections surround a glass-roofed winter garden, giving visitors somewhere to slow down between sculpture galleries and paintings.

Inside BLOX on Copenhagen's harbourfront, the Danish Architecture Center focuses on architecture, urban development and the way cities are designed. Its permanent So Danish! exhibition takes visitors through around 1,000 years of Danish architecture, from the Viking Age to the present day.

Absalon offers a more everyday side of Copenhagen's culture. The former church in Vesterbro has become a community house where visitors and local residents share communal dinners and join activities including bingo, table tennis, talks, music and themed events. The emphasis is firmly on participation rather than formal sightseeing.

Copenhagen Marathon takes place each spring, bringing thousands of runners through Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. The course passes several neighbourhoods while road closures and spectators turn large parts of the city into the setting for the race. The 2026 event took place on 10 May.

Distortion takes place in early summer and spreads street parties, electronic music, harbour events and club nights across Copenhagen. Rather than remaining behind a single festival gate, the programme moves between public spaces and neighbourhoods. The 2026 edition ran from 3 to 7 June.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival fills venues, streets and outdoor spaces across the city each summer. The programme ranges from classic and contemporary jazz to experimental, electronic, blues and global sounds, with both free and ticketed performances. The 2026 festival ran from 3 to 12 July.

Copenhagen Pride brings concerts, debates, community events, sports, family activities and a major parade to the city each summer. Pride Square at City Hall Square becomes one of the main meeting points during the week. In 2026, Pride Week ran from 8 to 16 August, with the parade on 15 August.

Copenhagen Cooking is an annual food festival built around restaurants, chefs, producers and food enthusiasts across the city. The programme can include long-table dinners, tastings, workshops, masterclasses, talks and special restaurant events. The 2026 festival runs from 21 to 30 August.

Culture Night takes place each autumn, when museums, historic buildings, cultural institutions and other venues open into the evening for special events and access outside normal hours. The 2026 Culture Night will take place on 9 October from 18:00 until midnight.

The Royal Danish Theatre spreads its programme across venues including the historic Old Stage, the Royal Danish Opera and the Playhouse. VEGA is one of Copenhagen's major live music venues and hosts around 250 concerts a year across its different halls. Rock, electronic music, hip hop and emerging artists all appear on the programme, while the building itself retains the character of the 1950s People's House from which the venue developed.

Jazzhus Montmartre has been part of Copenhagen's jazz history since 1959, when performers such as Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and Stan Getz appeared there. Reopened at its original Store Regnegade address in 2010, the intimate venue continues to programme jazz concerts throughout the year.

Kødbyen, Copenhagen's former Meatpacking District, now mixes restaurants, galleries, bars and nightlife among its old industrial buildings. Visitors can move easily from dinner to drinks or a late venue, while the area's working history gives it a noticeably different atmosphere from the polished streets of the old centre.

On Refshaleøen, Reffen combines street food, bars and creative spaces beside Copenhagen's former industrial harbour. Its Werkstatt space also hosts concerts, club nights, exhibitions and other events, giving visitors a reason to stay beyond dinner when something is scheduled for the evening.
