At around 15 metres deep, Grand Baie Aquarium combines rocky formations, coral and varied tropical marine life. Its manageable depth makes it accessible to many recreational divers, giving visitors an easy introduction to the underwater scenery found along Mauritius’s north coast.

Around eight kilometres off Mauritius’s north coast, protected Coin de Mire is surrounded by clear water and thriving reef life. Visitors arriving by boat can snorkel below its rust-coloured cliffs, looking for damselfish, moray eels, turtles and occasionally passing dolphins.

Catamarans leave Grand Baie for Îlot Gabriel, roughly 20 kilometres offshore, often sailing past Coin de Mire and Flat Island along the way. Visitors can step onto its bright white sandbar, swim in clear shallows and snorkel before returning across the northern lagoon.

The long curve of Mont Choisy Beach lies just south of Grand Baie, with calm, clear lagoon water suited to swimming and water sports. Visitors can combine time on the sand with snorkelling or diving among the marine life just offshore.

Beyond the protective reef, the seabed drops quickly into deeper Indian Ocean waters where blue and black marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi are found. Visitors joining guided fishing trips from the north can travel offshore with experienced crews searching for seasonal game fish.

Built during French rule in the 18th century, Balaclava developed as an industrial and strategic complex with an arsenal, foundry and flour mill. Visitors can walk among surviving basalt walls and waterways within the Maritim Estate, where paid public access is currently available.

Near the botanical garden, this stone basin is linked through historical research and oral tradition to enslaved Africans and Madagascans brought here before sale. Listed as National Heritage in 2023, the site allows visitors to confront a difficult chapter of Mauritius’s colonial past.

Mon Choisy once contained the airstrip where Maurice Samat and Paul Louis Lemerle completed the first flight to Mauritius from Réunion in September 1933. Visitors can see the Samat Monument near the former landing ground, marking an important moment in Mauritian aviation history.

The Saint-Géran sank off Poudre d’Or in 1744, a real maritime disaster later connected with Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s Paul et Virginie. Visitors can see the seafront memorial erected in 1944 for the shipwreck’s bicentenary and read its commemorative inscription.

This surviving stone tower once powered machinery connected with the Belle Rive sugar estate, reflecting the importance of sugar production in 19th-century northern Mauritius. Visitors passing through Cap Malheureux can see a National Heritage structure officially protected since 1951.

Sega remains a defining part of Mauritian culture, built around Creole lyrics, dance and traditional percussion. Around Grand Baie, visitors can encounter Sega performances alongside live bands and jam sessions, which take place regularly at resorts, restaurants and nightlife venues.

Founded in 1888, Maheswarnath Mandir is Mauritius’s largest Hindu temple and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Visitors can see its white pillars, colourful sculptures, Shiva Linga and smaller shrines while gaining an insight into the Hindu traditions woven through Mauritian life.

Grand Bazar adds a more local rhythm to Grand Baie’s polished shopping scene. Visitors can browse stalls filled with clothing, textiles, handicrafts and souvenirs, with the busy lanes offering a glimpse of everyday trading culture away from the resort’s modern boutiques.

Fishing still shapes everyday life around nearby Cap Malheureux, where small boats head onto the lagoon and the day’s catch returns to shore. Visitors may see local residents gathering near the waterfront to buy fresh fish directly from fishermen.

Set beside La Cuvette Beach, N’Joy regularly pairs live bands and acoustic performers with DJ sets later in the evening. Visitors can start with dinner or cocktails overlooking the water before the venue shifts into a livelier music-led atmosphere after dark.

A long-established name in Grand Baie nightlife, Banana Beach Club combines an open-air tropical bar with live music and late-night entertainment. Visitors can settle beneath the large flamboyant tree for drinks before the music and atmosphere build later in the evening.

Royal Road forms the heart of Grand Baie’s late-night club scene, with licensed venues including OMG Nightclub and Insomnia. Visitors looking to continue beyond the bars will find DJs, dance floors and nightlife that typically carries on well into the night.

Evening catamarans leave Grand Baie lagoon and sail into open water as the sun drops over Mauritius’s north-west coast. Visitors can choose cruises with music, drinks and snacks, while longer sailings add dinner and dancing back inside the sheltered bay.

Grand Baie Casino is one of the casinos officially operated under Mauritius’s State Investment Corporation and offers live table games alongside slot machines. Visitors looking for a different evening experience can combine time here with dinner or drinks around Grand Baie’s surrounding nightlife district.

Grand Baie La Croisette Food Festival regularly hosts its popular food festival, bringing together local and international dishes, entertainment and family activities. Visitors can browse food stalls, try different flavours and enjoy live music or performances across the shopping center’s outdoor spaces. 

Around World Music Day in June, Grand Baie joins celebrations taking place across Mauritius. La Croisette has hosted open-mic sessions and major live performances, giving visitors a free evening of Sega, contemporary Mauritian music and outdoor concerts.

Northern Mauritius has regularly featured in Festival Internasional Kreol, including previous events in Grand Baie and Mont Choisy. Visitors travelling during the festival may find Sega, Creole food, live music and cultural performances nearby, although locations and programmes vary each year.
