People travel halfway around the world for this. In Volcanoes National Park, small groups hike through bamboo-covered slopes with expert trackers before spending an hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. The walk can be steep and muddy, but once the gorillas appear, everything else fades into the background.

The day starts early in Nyungwe National Park, because that is when the forest is at its busiest. Guides listen for distant calls before leading visitors through thick rainforest in search of wild chimpanzees. They rarely stay still for long, so expect to keep moving once they are found.

Not every wildlife trek in Rwanda is as demanding as the gorilla experience. Golden monkeys, found in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park, are constantly on the move, jumping between branches and feeding on bamboo shoots. Their playful behaviour makes this one of the park’s most enjoyable walks. 

The suspension bridge in Nyungwe National Park hangs high above the forest, giving a completely different perspective of the rainforests below. Birds fly at eye level, monkeys move through the treetops and, on a clear day, the layers of forest seem to stretch endlessly beyond the valley.

The climb to Mount Bisoke doesn’t stay the same for long. Rainforest gradually gives way to open volcanic slopes before the crater lake finally comes into view at the summit. Most hikers spend six to seven hours on the mountain, with park guides leading the route from start to finish.

Rwanda’s highest mountain, Mount Karisimbi, is usually tackled over two days. The trail climbs through rainforest, bamboo and alpine vegetation before reaching volcanic terrain near the summit. Camping overnight is part of the experience, with an early start for the final ascent.

Following the shoreline of Lake Kivu, the 227-kilometre Congo Nile Trail links fishing villages, tea plantations and quiet rural communities. Some travellers complete the full route over several days, while others choose shorter cycling or walking sections to explore the scenery at a slower pace.

Once you are on the water, Lake Kivu feels very different from the shore. Guided kayaking trips pass small islands, fishing boats and lakeside villages that are difficult to appreciate from the road. Routes range from a relaxed paddle lasting a few hours to multi-day expeditions.

Wide open plains, scattered acacia trees and lakes replace the forests found elsewhere in Rwanda. Akagera National Park is home to the Big Five, along with giraffes, zebras, hippos and countless antelope. Game drives run throughout the day, while boat safaris offer another way to explore the park. 

A boat trip across Lake Ihema reveals wildlife that is easy to miss from a vehicle. Hippos spend hours in the water, crocodiles rest along the banks and birdlife is everywhere, especially around the reeds and papyrus lining the shoreline. 

Rwanda attracts birdwatchers for good reason. Nyungwe National Park shelters forest specialties, while Akagera National Park is known for wetland and savannah species. Together, these habitats support more than 700 recorded bird species, making the country one of East Africa’s leading birding destinations.

A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial is a moving but important part of understanding modern Rwanda. The memorial is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi, while exhibitions, photographs and survivor testimonies explain the events, their impact and the country’s ongoing journey towards reconciliation.

Around 30 kilometres south of Kigali, Nyamata Genocide Memorial stands inside a former church where thousands of people sought refuge during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Many personal belongings remain exactly where they were found, creating a powerful reminder of the lives lost.

Also housed in a former church, Ntarama Genocide Memorial preserves the site much as it was discovered after the genocide. Clothing, personal possessions and the building itself bear witness to the tragedy, offering visitors a quiet space to reflect on one of Rwanda’s darkest chapters.

Located inside Rwanda’s Parliamentary Building in Kigali, the Museum for Campaign Against Genocide tells the story of the military campaign that brought the genocide to an end. Exhibits include preserved trenches, outdoor monuments, a heroes’ garden and displays explaining key moments during the liberation.

The Kandt House Museum occupies the former residence of Dr Richard Kandt, Rwanda’s first German colonial resident. Today, its exhibitions trace the country’s social, political and economic history before and during German colonial rule, while also exploring how Kigali developed into the nation’s capital. 

In Gicumbi District, the Rwanda Liberation Museum focuses on the liberation struggle led by the Rwanda Patriotic Front. Visitors can see preserved military structures, including the command bunker used during the campaign, alongside exhibitions explaining the events that shaped Rwanda’s modern history.

A visit to Gorilla Guardians Village, just outside Volcanoes National Park, is an easy way to experience Rwanda’s traditions in one place. You will watch lively Intore dance performances, try traditional archery, see how banana beer is prepared and hear stories that have been passed down through generations. It is interactive rather than staged which makes the experience feel genuinely memorable.

In Nyanza, the King’s Palace Museum offers a fascinating introduction to Rwanda’s royal past. The reconstructed palace shows how the country’s monarchs once lived, while the elegant Inyambo cattle, famous for their extraordinary long horns, remain one of the biggest highlights. If you are lucky, you will even see them responding to traditional songs, just as they did centuries ago. 

The Ethnographic Museum in Huye is the place to visit if you want to understand Rwanda beyond its wildlife. Instead of rushing through displays, take your time exploring traditional tools, woven crafts, hunting equipment, musical instruments and archaeological collections. Together, they paint a detailed picture of how everyday life has evolved across the country.

You won’t find artwork quite like Imigongo anywhere else. Originating in Nyakarambi, these striking black, white and earthy-red geometric designs are created using cow dung mixed with natural pigments. Many local workshops welcome visitors, so you can watch the process up close and buy directly from the artists keeping this centuries-old craft alive. 

If Rwanda’s traditional culture tells one story, Inema Arts Center in Kigali tells another. The gallery is filled with bold contemporary paintings and sculptures, but it is also a working creative space where artists paint, dancers rehearse and community events regularly take place. There is always something happening, which is exactly what makes it worth visiting.

Some of Kigali’s best experiences don’t involve museums at all. A guided walk through Nyamirambo takes you into one of the city’s most colourful neighbourhoods, where markets, cafés, mosques and family-run businesses sit side by side. Going with a local guide adds stories and everyday insights you would almost certainly miss on your own.

Kimironko Market is busy from the moment it opens, and that is part of its charm. Locals come here for everything from tropical fruit and spices to colourful kitenge fabrics and handmade baskets. Wander slowly, chat with the vendors if you can, and don’t be surprised if you leave carrying far more than you planned.

Few performances capture Rwanda’s cultural identity quite like the Intore dance. Once performed for kings and royal ceremonies, it combines graceful movements with energetic drumming and colourful dress. Even today, watching an Intore performance feels like entertainment and more like witnessing a tradition that has endured for generations.

The magnificent Inyambo cattle have long been regarded as symbols of prestige in Rwanda. Their sweeping horns are impossible to ignore, but it is the ceremonial parades that visitors remember most. Accompanied by traditional flute music and cattle poems, the display offers a rare glimpse into customs once reserved for the royal court.

If you are in Rwanda on the last Saturday of the month, you will notice the pace of life changes. Shops often close for a few hours as communities come together for Umuganda, the country’s nationwide day of public service. Residents clean streets, plant trees and work on neighbourhood projects, reflecting a tradition that continues to strengthen community ties and national unity.

Every year in September, thousands of people make their way to Kinigi for Kwita Izina, Rwanda’s famous gorilla naming ceremony. The tradition is inspired by the way Rwandan families name newborn babies, except here the names are given to mountain gorillas born during the year. Intore dancers, drummers, conservationists and local communities all come together, making it one of the country’s biggest wildlife celebrations.

Harvest time has always held a special pace in Rwanda, which is why Umuganura remains one of the country’s most meaningful celebrations. Observed on the first Friday of August, the festival dates back to the reign of King Gihanga and was restored as a national public holiday in 2011. Families and communities gather to celebrate the harvest, share food and recognise the values of gratitude, unity and hard work.

When KigaliUp! arrives during the northern summer months, music takes over parts of the capital. Festival stages feature reggae, blues, hip-hop, pop and traditional African music, with Rwandan performers sharing the spotlight with artists from overseas. Between concerts, you will often find workshops and informal jam sessions where musicians and audiences mix without much ceremony.

The Hobe Rwanda Festival has been part of Kigali’s cultural calendar since 2013 and usually takes place over two days in September. Its focus stays firmly on Rwandan creativity, bringing together local musicians, dancers and artists, while a small number of international performers also join the programme. If you want to experience contemporary Rwandan culture in one place, this is one of the best opportunities.

Most know it simply as Hillywood. Every July, films from Rwanda, across Africa and around the world are screened in Kigali, before the festival heads out to towns and villages with its travelling pop-up cinema. Workshops and discussions are held along the way, giving local audiences the chance to meet filmmakers and explore stories from different cultures.

The International Kigali Peace Marathon brings thousands of runners to Kigali each June. Some take on the full marathon, others choose the half marathon or the Run for Peace, but the streets are lined with supporters throughout the day. It is one of Rwanda’s biggest annual sporting events and attracts participants from many different countries.

Even if you are not planning your trip around a concert or basketball game, it is worth checking what is happening at BK Arena. The venue regularly hosts Basketball Africa League fixtures, Afrobeats concerts and international cultural events, so there is often something on the calendar. When the doors open, the atmosphere changes completely as fans stream in from across the city.

Kigali looks different from above. Late in the day, rooftop terraces at Ubumwe Grande Hotel and Kigali Heights start to fill up, not because they are flashy, but because the view does most of the work. As the sun drops behind the hills, the city slowly lights up below.

Good coffee is part of everyday life in Rwanda, so don’t leave Kigali without stopping at Question Coffee. You can sample locally grown beans, join a tasting session and learn a little about the farmers behind them. Afterwards, it is easy to find everything from grilled brochettes to international restaurants within a short drive.

Weekend markets have a quieter pace than Kigali’s busiest shopping areas. Farmers arrive with fresh produce, while local makers lay out woven baskets, jewellery, soaps and handmade crafts. If something catches your eye, don’t rush off. Many stallholders are happy to explain how it is made and where the materials come from.

Some evenings in Kigali are best left unplanned. A hotel courtyard might have traditional drummers performing, while another venue hosts an Intore dance troupe or a local band. One night can feel deeply rooted in Rwandan tradition; the next is all contemporary music and a younger crowd.
