Kakaban Island in East Kalimantan hides a strange little lake surrounded by mangroves, filled with jellyfish that no longer sting. Floating quietly beside them feels oddly calming at first, then slightly surreal once you realise how rare the place actually is.

Bali’s interior gets muddy, wild, and surprisingly adventurous once you leave the beach and the towns behind. Around Ubud, travellers cycle through rice fields, ride quad bikes along jungle tracks, and rappel down hidden waterfalls during canyoning trips in the valleys.

Monas (National Monument) in central Jakarta is a 132-metre symbol of Indonesia’s independence, topped with a gold flame. Go up to the viewing deck for sweeping city views, and inside the base museum, discover the story of the country’s independence and history. 

You have to drag yourself out of bed at 4 a.m. to visit this spot in Central Java. Watching the sunrise hit the beautiful 72 stone stupas is surreal. It is a massive 9th-century UNESCO masterpiece, packed with detailed relief carvings.

Right outside Jogja is located Indonesia's grandest 9th century Hindu Site. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can walk around the towering stone courtyards. A visit to this site makes you realise how ancient and rich Java's history is.

Up in the cool, mist-heavy highlands of Central Java, Dieng Plateau Temples feel a bit otherworldly. The 8th-century Hindu temples sit half-lost in fog and sulphur haze, and when you are actually there, everything feels quieter than expected.

On Samosir Island in Lake Toba, there is a stone courtyard in Ambarita with carved Batak chairs which was once a serious place for tribal justice, ceremonies, and darker historical rituals tied to the old Batak culture.

Sumba feels like stepping into an older rhythm of life. Near Waikabubak, villages sit among huge stone tombs and traditions like the Pasola Festival still happen, which are fast, chaotic, and horseback spear-fighting clashes that locals treat as both ritual and identity.

Up in South Sulawesi’s highlands, Tana Toraja is known for its dramatic tongkonan houses with boat-shaped roofs. Funerals here are long, detailed affairs, and sometimes delayed for years, with ceremonies that mix respect, family duty, and deep cultural meaning.

In Bukit Lawang, Gunung Leuser National Park, orangutans move quietly through the rainforest canopy if you are lucky. Further south in Kerinci Seblat, the forest gets wilder, protecting one of the last strongholds of the elusive Sumatran tiger. 

Set in Central Java, Indonesia, the Sangiran Early Man Site is a prehistoric site, known for Homo erectus fossils, ancient stone tools, and geological layers dating back around 2.4 million years. It gives a rare look into how early humans lived and evolved during the Pleistocene era.

Lake Toba is massive. On Samosir Island, Batak villages show carved houses, weaving traditions, and music that carries across the water. It feels calm but deeply rooted in history.

At sunset in Uluwatu, the cliff gets crowded quickly. The Kecak dance starts with rhythmic chanting, no instruments, just voices, while the Ramayana story plays out as the sky turns orange over the ocean.

Start your morning in Ubud markets with spices, chilli, herbs everywhere. Then enjoy cooking with a local family which feels simple and relaxed, and learn to grind sambal, pick-up satay tricks, and eat everything together in a small garden kitchen.

In Yogyakarta, batik is more than a craft, it is patience. At places like Danar Hadi, you see how intricate patterns take shape slowly, each fabric carrying a bit of Java’s cultural identity and UNESCO recognition.

Indonesian food can be messy, spicy, and very addictive. In Ubud, people hop between smoky night market stalls selling satay and places like Locavore or Room4Dessert, where local ingredients get turned into creative fine-dining plates.

Canggu starts slow with surfers and sunset drinks at Echo Beach, then suddenly turns lively after dark. Over on the Gili Islands, beach parties spill onto the sand, though some bars stay quiet with nothing but reggae and sea breeze.

After long hikes and humid days exploring temples, a Balinese massage feels almost necessary. In places like Ubud and Canggu, small local spas sit on nearly every street and many are affordable for how good they are.

Just outside Ubud, Pod Chocolate gives a closer look at how Indonesian cocoa is grown and turned into rich craft chocolate. The smell hits first. Warm cocoa, roasting beans, and melting chocolate drifting through the factory the entire tour.

Indonesia has several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including ancient temples, volcanic national parks, pristine islands, and the wild habitat of Komodo dragons.

UNESCO-listed Komodo National Park feels raw and a bit wild in the best way. With an armed ranger guiding you, trekking Komodo or Rinca Island brings you close to Komodo dragons in their natural, rugged terrain.

Tucked away on the western edge of Java, Ujung Kulon National Park feels untouched with dense rainforest, quiet beaches, coral reefs, and rare wildlife. Best known as the last natural home of the Java rhino, it offers raw, unforgettable nature experiences.

Hidden out in Papua, Lorentz National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest protected area in Southeast Asia. Explore everything from thick rainforest and mangroves to alpine peaks and actual glaciers. It is insanely remote, but it is packed with wildlife, including tree kangaroos and rare birds-of-paradise.

Tegallalang has that classic Ubud view, all layered green steps and palm edges. Jatiluwih, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, feels bigger and quieter, with endless rice fields shaped by the traditional subak irrigation system.

Right in the middle of Ubud, the Sacred Monkey Forest is more than just playful macaques. Over 700 monkeys roam ancient stone temples and thick forest paths where locals still treat the area as spiritually important.

Medewi’s black sand feels almost untouched, while Komodo’s Pink Beach gets its unusual blush colour from tiny red Foraminifera mixed into the sand. Gili Meno and Gili Air are slower, quieter, almost like time drifts differently there

Mount Kelimutu’s three crater lakes in Flores don’t stay the same for long. Locals talk about them like living spirits, shifting colours from turquoise to dark red depending on volcanic gases. The hike up feels misty and strangely peaceful.

At sunset near Kalong Island, the sky suddenly fills with giant fruit bats leaving the mangroves. It is loud, a bit chaotic, and oddly beautiful watching thousands of them glide out together over Komodo waters

 Pura Lempuyang Luhur Temple is famous for that “Gate of Heaven” photo spot with Mount Agung in the background. You will likely queue for a while, but the temple itself feels calm, with mist rolling in and bells ringing softly nearby.

Nusa Penida is rough around the edges with bumpy roads, sharp cliffs, and sudden drop views; however, places like Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach make the ride worth it, especially when the ocean hits that unreal blue below.

From Riung, local fishermen take you through the 17 Islands Marine Park. It is quiet, not overbuilt, offering snorkelling reefs, empty beaches, and simple grilled fish lunches cooked right on the sand.
