Travel Advice and Safety Information

Kyrgyzstan is typically a very safe, peaceful, and welcoming country, especially when visiting major tourist destinations. Taking standard precautions is advisable. Keep the following emergency contacts in mind to be on a safer side.

Emergency numbers

Police 102
Fire Department 101
Ambulance 103

Kyrgyzstan remains a secure destination for international travellers, with the vast majority of visits concluding without incident. The primary risks are environmental rather than criminal, driven by rapid high-altitude weather shifts and remote mountain terrain. Travellers venturing beyond major urban centres should prepare comprehensively for limited cell coverage and long transit distances.

Key Safety Considerations

  • Pickpocketing and bag snatching are quite common in crowded places, so keep your valuables out of sight or just carry what’s important.

  • Keep an eye for fake police officers, always ask to see their badges before entertaining them.

  • Never leave your food or drinks unattended, as there’s a high risk of spiking in the bars and nightclubs, especially in Bishkek.

  • Avoid driving at night as mountain roads outside of the capital are dangerous due to poor lighting, less number of guardrails, and roaming livestock.

  • There’s a very high risk of earthquakes, avalanches, and landslides in Kyrgyzstan, so it's vital to keep a track of local weather alerts.

  • Altitude sickness is one of the major risks in the country, so whilst you trek or travel to high-altitude zones (above 3,000 metres), adjust gradually to the elevation by ascending slowly.

Local Laws & Culture

  • Avoid being the part of the public demonstrations or rallies as they can escalate without warning.

  • The borders with Tajikistan have experienced historical closures and armed conflicts, make sure to check the recent border restrictions and stay on open, official routes.

  • Refrain yourself from photographing military installations, border checkpoints, or any sensitive infrastructure.

  • Bread (Lepeshka) is sacred in Kyrgyzstan, ensure that you are never throwing away the bread or keeping it upside down on the table. Also, tear the bread by hand, not by knife.

  • Western-style clothing is acceptable in Bishkek, but dress modestly in rural areas, and mosques; shoulder & knees should stay covered.
