The Anse Major coastal hike begins on Mahé’s north-west side and reaches a beach with no road access. The trail stays relatively manageable, weaving above granite coastline and through tropical vegetation before dropping to white sand and clear water.

The Morne Blanc Trail starts from Sans Soucis Road between Victoria and Port Glaud. It is short but steep, climbing through dense forest to a high viewpoint where Mahé’s west coast opens below in a wide sweep of sea and mountains.

The Copolia Trail begins on Sans Soucis Road, closer to Victoria. The path climbs steadily through thick forest before reaching an exposed granite summit, where wide views stretch across Victoria, Eden Island and the bright blue waters off Mahé’s east coast.

The Mare aux Cochons trail crosses Mahé mountainous interior through forest, wetlands and high plateaux. It is a longer and more demanding walk, with  endemic palms, pandanus and other native plants adding interest along the way.

Island hopping and snorkelling in Sainte Anne Marine National Park is an easy adventure from Victoria. Boats reach six small islands and surrounding reefs, where visitors can snorkel among abundant fish, look for turtles, stop at sandbars and visit Moyenne’s giant tortoises.

Scuba diving around Mahé covers coral reefs, granite formations and wrecks, with options suited to different levels of experience. Turtles and rays are among the marine life divers may encounter, while whale sharks can also appear in Seychelles waters seasonally.

Catamaran sailing from Mahé offers a slower way to reach the islands around Sainte Anne Marine National Park. Trips from the Victoria area combine open-water cruising with reef stops, swimming and marine-life viewing, making the day active without feeling rushed.

Wetland kayaking with White Sands Adventures takes place around Grand Police Bay on Mahé, where paddlers move quietly through a high-biodiversity wetland. The small-scale approach suits travellers who want wildlife, scenery and a lower-impact activity away from the island’s busier beaches.

White Sands Adventures also runs off-road 4x4 outings from Port Glaud, heading towards tropical viewpoints, waterfalls and lesser-known tracks. It is a good fit for travellers who want to see wilder parts of Mahé without committing to a long mountain hike.

Ros Sodyer Rock Pool lies near Anse Takamaka on Mahé’s south-west coast. An unofficial coastal trail of around 45 to 60 minutes leads to the tidal pool beneath the granite cliffs. Visitors should only approach in calm conditions and around low tide.

The first recorded European landing in Seychelles was made by an English expedition in 1609. Lazare Picault’s French expedition reached Mahé in 1742, and France formally claimed the islands in 1756, beginning an influence still visible in local place names, language and culture.

French control gave way to Britain in the early nineteenth century, with the 1814 Treaty of Paris formally ceding Seychelles to British rule. The islands later became a separate Crown Colony in 1903 and finally gained independence from Britain in 1976.

Mission Lodge at Venn’s Town preserves the ruins of a nineteenth-century school established for children of liberated Africans. Set within Morne Seychellois National Park, the historically important site also appears on Seychelles’ UNESCO Tentative List rather than the inscribed World Heritage List.

Victoria grew into Seychelles’ colonial capital and still carries visible reminders of British rule. Its Clock Tower was erected in 1903, while the city’s market, civic buildings and compact street plan give visitors a readable sense of how the administrative centre developed.

East Mahé preserves less obvious layers of history in former factories, dryers, workshops, reservoirs, old water pipes and traditional homes. These everyday structures record how island communities produced goods, managed water and built livelihoods long before modern development reshaped the eastern corridor.

Mahé’s Creole culture grew from African, French, British, Arab, Chinese and Tamil influences, and that mix still shapes everyday island life. Creole, English and French are widely spoken, while food, music, dance and art carry the strongest sense of local identity.

Victoria’s Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market is a good place to get a feel for everyday Seychellois life. While the main market undergoes renovation, traders continue from a temporary location in Victoria, selling fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, spices and local crafts.

Traditional Seychelles sun printing turns strong tropical light into textile art. Local makers use native plants and carefully arranged patterns to create colourful fabric designs, and workshops on Mahé let visitors try the process themselves and take home something genuinely personal.

East Mahé’s heritage trail brings together 70 identified sites across districts including Cascade, Pointe La Rue and Anse Aux Pins. Plantation houses, Kaz Kreol homes, churches, cemeteries, workshops, water systems and natural landmarks reveal how communities lived, worked and adapted.

Le Jardin du Roi feels part garden, part history lesson. This colonial-style plantation grows cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, breadfruit and other tropical plants, linking Mahé to centuries of spice trading while giving visitors a quieter look at the island’s agricultural heritage.

Eden Island is one of Mahé’s livelier evening areas, especially for waterfront dining. The reclaimed island sits just off Victoria and mixes restaurants, shops, luxury villas and a polished marina, making it an easy place for dinner followed by a waterside stroll.

Beau Vallon works well for an easy evening by the sea. The broad beach is backed by restaurants, resorts and informal vendors, so visitors can move from sunset to dinner without much planning, with a noticeably livelier atmosphere than quieter parts of Mahé.

A visit to Takamaka Rum Distillery gives a good introduction to Seychelles’ best-known local rum. Guided tours at La Plaine St André cover the rum-making story, include tastings, and leave time to wander the historic estate, gardens and small museum.

For visitors who want something beyond beaches and restaurants, Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort adds a casino to Mahé’s entertainment mix. The beachfront property also has several restaurants and a pizzeria, so the evening can stay in one place without feeling overly formal.

For a quieter evening, Creole dining is part of the entertainment in its own right. Victoria and Beau Vallon have restaurants serving local seafood and island flavours, while beach shacks add grilled fish, fruit and casual drinks closer to the sand.

Held on Mahé each March, Semaine de la Francophonie celebrates the islands’ French heritage through music, literature, exhibitions, fashion and food. Visitors can enjoy a varied cultural programme while seeing how French influences remain woven into modern Seychellois identity.

Celebrated around Africa Day in May, FetAfrik highlights the African roots of Seychellois culture in Mahé. Music, dance, art and food bring those connections to life, with local Creole traditions sitting naturally alongside influences from across the African continent.

Beau Vallon’s annual Regatta turns the beachfront into a lively gathering of watersports, music, local food and community events. Dating back to 1973, it remains one of Mahé’s best-known celebrations and a particularly enjoyable time to visit the island’s north-west coast.

Festival Kreol is Seychelles’ biggest celebration of Creole identity, with Mahé hosting many of its main events each October. Expect traditional music and dance, theatre, art, local food and lively gatherings, particularly around Victoria and other cultural venues across the island.
