Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge on foot gives New York City a proper sense of scale. Start early if you can, before the walkway clogs up, and keep looking back towards Lower Manhattan. Once across, Brooklyn Bridge Park gives you another excellent skyline angle.

Cycling Central Park is the quickest way to realise how large the place is. New York City drops away behind trees, lakes and long curves of road, then suddenly appears again between them. Take your time; this is much better than treating it as exercise.

Walking the High Line turns an old elevated railway into a route through west Manhattan. Gardens, public art and city views break up the walk, and you can join or leave at several points. Finish near Chelsea Market if food is becoming the priority.

Ride the Staten Island Ferry when you want harbour views without paying for a sightseeing cruise. The route gives New York City a little breathing room, with the Statue of Liberty off to the side and Lower Manhattan opening up behind you.

A river cruise changes the scale of Manhattan completely. From the water, New York City becomes a long wall of towers rather than a maze of streets. Pick a route that circles major landmarks, then bring an extra layer because the deck can feel cooler.

The Roosevelt Island Tram is short, inexpensive and more fun than another subway journey. It lifts you above the East River, with New York City traffic moving below and Midtown beside you. Ride over, walk around Roosevelt Island, then return when you are ready.

Coney Island is the escape when Manhattan starts feeling too vertical. Take the train out to Brooklyn for the boardwalk, beach and old-school amusement atmosphere. It is liveliest in warm weather, but even the journey makes New York City feel far bigger than Midtown.

The 9/11 Memorial is difficult to rush, even if your schedule says otherwise. The two reflecting pools sit in the footprints of the Twin Towers, with victims’ names around the edges. Below ground, the museum carries the story through artefacts, recordings and personal accounts.

Ellis Island makes more sense when you give it time after seeing the Statue of Liberty. Around 12 million immigrants passed through the inspection station, and the museum turns that huge number into individual journeys, documents and family stories. The ferry links both islands.

The Tenement Museum does not give you one grand historic building. Instead, recreated apartments and neighbourhood walks tell the stories of immigrant families who lived on the Lower East Side. The small rooms make New York’s migration history feel immediate rather than distant.

The New York Transit Museum sits inside a former subway station in Brooklyn, which already makes it more fun than most transport museums. Vintage subway and elevated cars fill the platforms, and you can actually step inside them rather than stare from behind barriers.

Grand Central Terminal is a working station, so the history comes with commuters cutting across the floor beneath you. Look up at the celestial ceiling and huge windows, then wander the passages. Completed in 1913, it feels grand without needing to behave like a museum.

Seeing a Broadway show is one of the few New York clichés that genuinely earns its place. Pick the production you want, not the biggest name, and book ahead if dates matter. Times Square is right outside, so the evening already feels unmistakably New York.

If Broadway prices make you wince, look beyond the big theatres. Off-Broadway and smaller Off-Off-Broadway spaces are where new plays, odd ideas and future hits often begin. Hamilton started Off-Broadway, which tells you why these smaller stages are worth checking before dismissing them.

The Comedy Cellar is the sort of New York night where the room matters almost as much as the comedian. It is underground, close-packed and famous for strong line-ups. Book ahead, then spend some time around Greenwich Village before or after the show.

RiseNY works when you want sightseeing without another long walk. Part museum, part pop-culture trip and part flight-simulator ride, it builds towards a soaring virtual journey over the city. It is very polished, slightly over-the-top and good fun when the weather turns.

Spyscape turns Midtown into a playground for anyone who secretly thinks they would make a decent spy. Expect code-breaking, surveillance-style challenges and physical tests rather than glass cases and labels. It is more of a game than a museum, which is exactly why it works.

The Museum of Ice Cream in SoHo is unapologetically silly. You come for bright rooms, photo spots and sweet treats, not a serious museum afternoon. It works best with friends, children or anyone happy to lean into the colour rather than ask too many questions.

Chelsea Market is an easy place to lose an hour, especially when you arrive hungry. Food counters sit beside shops inside the old industrial building, and the High Line is right nearby. Do the walk first, then come down when you are ready to eat.

An NBA game gives you a New York night with plenty of noise. The sport moves quickly, the arena atmosphere needs little explaining, and basketball fans can get pulled in. Check the schedule before your trip rather than assuming a game will line up.

New York’s holiday markets are less about ticking off an attraction and more about wandering with something hot in your hands. Union Square is a favourite, with small stalls packed tightly together. If you are visiting in December, it fits naturally into an evening out.

The Met is one of those museums where trying to see everything is a mistake. Start with the Egyptian rooms or arms and armour, then follow whatever catches your eye. Its collection stretches across thousands of years, with Vermeer, Monet and plenty more.

MoMA feels completely different. Van Gogh’s The Starry Night may be the familiar draw, but the fun is wandering into rooms where modern art gets stranger, sharper and more playful. Give it a couple of hours rather than squeezing it between bigger sights.

Even before you look at the art, Frank Lloyd Wright’s spiralling Guggenheim building steals some attention. Walk the ramp rather than treating it like a normal gallery floor. The museum is also part of UNESCO’s World Heritage listing for Wright’s twentieth-century architecture.

A night at the Metropolitan Opera is one of New York’s grander cultural experiences, but you do not need to be an opera expert. The scale of the house, orchestra and performances does the work, whether the programme is Puccini, Verdi or something unfamiliar.

Walk up the marble steps and give yourself time to look around this landmark Fifth Avenue library. Grand halls, historic collections, exhibitions and impressive reading rooms make it much more than a quick photo stop, even if you only have an hour to spare.

The Morgan is much smaller than the Met, which is part of its appeal. The East Room feels wonderfully old-fashioned, with books climbing three levels, a large fireplace and an ornate ceiling. It is an easy cultural stop when Midtown starts feeling too hectic.

Little Italy is only a few blocks now, but it still makes sense as a food-and-street stop rather than a museum piece. Come hungry, wander around Mulberry Street, grab gelato or something Italian, and September brings the Feast of San Gennaro into the neighbourhood.

For a night that feels far removed from Midtown, look at what is happening at the Nuyorican Poets Café. Spoken word, poetry and live performance are the point here. The room is intimate, so arriving early matters more than dressing up for it.

On St Patrick’s Day, New York turns the parade into hours of bagpipes, marching bands and Irish step dancing. It is loud, busy and unmistakably festive. If the weather turns cold, which it easily can in March, layers make the wait much easier.

Chinatown becomes noticeably louder and brighter around January or February, depending on the lunar calendar. Dragon dances weave through the streets alongside floats, musicians and martial artists, while celebrations also spread into Flushing and Sunset Park.

Fifth Avenue fills with bagpipes, marching bands and plenty of green during March. New York’s parade dates back to 1762 and remains a huge celebration of Irish culture, running through Midtown and the Upper East Side.

For several days in June, Lower Manhattan turns into a film and entertainment hub. Tribeca brings premieres, talks, music and red-carpet screenings together, but some of the most enjoyable events are the outdoor screenings where the atmosphere feels far less formal.

Usually held in June, this is one of Fifth Avenue’s most energetic days. Huge crowds gather for colourful floats, live music and tens of thousands of marchers celebrating Puerto Rican heritage, with the noise and atmosphere carrying well beyond the parade route.

Pride events run throughout June, building towards the main parade on the last Sunday of the month. The celebrations honour New York’s LGBTQ+ community and the legacy of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, with major events taking place across the five boroughs.

New York does 4 July at full volume. Fireworks burst above the skyline to a musical soundtrack, and people begin claiming waterfront viewing spots well before dark. It is one of those nights when being early really does matter.

Also on 4 July, Coney Island hosts a rather different New York tradition. Competitive eaters face ten frantic minutes of hot dogs while a packed crowd cheers from the boardwalk. Strange, excessive and somehow completely at home in Coney Island.

The US Open brings the final Grand Slam of the tennis season to Flushing Meadows in Queens from late August into September. Alongside the main tournament, Fan Week brings practice sessions, qualifying matches and activities around the grounds.

Little Italy is at its busiest during September, when Mulberry Street fills with lights, food stalls and crowds for San Gennaro. Expect religious traditions beside live entertainment, parades and unapologetically large amounts of Italian food, including the famous cannoli-eating contest.

Cosplayers start appearing around the Javits Center every October, which is usually the first clue Comic Con has arrived. Inside, the programme moves between celebrity panels, screenings, gaming, comics and enormous exhibition areas packed with fans and collectors.

Greenwich Village becomes wonderfully strange on 31 October. Giant puppets, bands, dancers and thousands of costumed participants take over the streets for the Village Halloween Parade, while spectators crowd the route simply to see what bizarre costume comes past next.

The marathon takes over all five boroughs in November, starting on Staten Island and finishing in Central Park. You do not need to be running to enjoy it; neighbourhoods along the 26.2-mile route turn into loud, generous cheering sections.

Held on Thanksgiving Day each November, this is the morning when enormous character balloons float above Manhattan alongside marching bands, performers and elaborate floats. The route finishes near Macy’s Herald Square, but good viewing spots disappear surprisingly early.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting is one of the moments that signals the start of New York’s festive season. The ceremony usually takes place in late November or early December, with the tree remaining illuminated throughout the holiday period. Check the confirmed date if you are planning your trip around it.

On 31 December, Times Square becomes one enormous countdown. Crowds arrive hours before midnight for live performances and the famous crystal ball drop, followed by the kind of noise, confetti and celebration that makes New York feel completely awake at midnight.
