Cozumel is famous for drift diving, with currents carrying divers past reef walls, coral formations and swim-throughs at sites including Palancar, Colombia and Santa Rosa. Dive conditions vary, so choose a site suited to certification and experience and use a reputable operator.

El Cielo is a shallow sandbar known for clear water and starfish resting on the seabed. It is normally reached by authorised boat within the protected marine area. Keep a safe distance from wildlife, never handle starfish and follow current marine-park restrictions.

Punta Sur’s lagoon is surrounded by mangroves and provides opportunities to see waterbirds and crocodiles from managed routes and guided boat trips. Kayaking and paddleboarding may also operate in designated areas when conditions allow. Several hours are worth allowing for the wider park.

Cozumel’s flatter roads suit cycling, particularly along the west and south of the island. Longer coastal routes can be more demanding because of heat, headwinds and limited shade. Start early, carry plenty of water and plan carefully before riding remote stretches.

Set in a former waterfront hotel, the Cozumel Museum covers the island’s geology, ecosystems, Maya heritage and modern development through interactive displays and temporary exhibitions. It provides useful background before visiting archaeological sites, marine areas or other parts of the island.

The Celarain Lighthouse at Punta Sur reflects Cozumel’s long maritime history. The adjoining museum covers navigation, lighthouse keeping and regional sea routes. When access is available, visitors can climb the lighthouse for views across the surrounding reserve and coastline.

San Miguel is Cozumel’s main town and commercial centre. Parque Benito Juárez, San Miguel Arcángel church and the waterfront are all close to the passenger ferry terminal, while streets farther inland reveal more of the island’s everyday shops, neighbourhoods and local life.

Cozumel was an important pilgrimage destination associated with Ixchel. The modern Sacred Maya Journey recreates the sea crossing between the mainland and the island using traditional-style canoes, drawing attention to Cozumel’s historical role within the wider Maya region.

Ixchel remains an important part of Cozumel’s cultural identity, appearing in archaeological interpretation, public art and local traditions. Visiting San Gervasio or the island museum provides useful context about the evidence surrounding her role in Cozumel’s Maya history.

Murals across San Miguel depict marine life, local history, conservation and contemporary island culture. Many were created through public art projects involving Mexican and international artists. Walking a few streets beyond the waterfront reveals some of the most interesting pieces.

Cozumel’s municipal market is used by residents for fresh produce, seafood, household shopping and everyday meals. It is a good place to try local dishes away from the cruise-port restaurants, particularly at breakfast or lunchtime. Mexican pesos are useful for smaller purchases.

Carnival comparsas, Yucatecan jarana and Mexican folk dance feature during Cozumel’s festivals and public events. Performances may take place around Parque Benito Juárez, Parque Quintana Roo and other civic spaces, with programmes changing according to the season. 

Local shops and workshops sell jewellery, textiles, ceramics and artwork inspired by Cozumel’s culture and marine environment. Check where products were made if locally produced crafts are important, and avoid souvenirs made from coral, turtle shell or protected wildlife.

One of the island’s biggest annual celebrations, Carnaval de Cozumel brings parades, costumes, music, dance and competitions to San Miguel before Lent. It usually takes place in February or early March, with road closures and larger crowds around the waterfront.

Held around late April and early May, the Feria de El Cedral combines religious traditions with music, food, sport, horsemanship and community celebrations. The event is closely linked with the families who settled in Cozumel during the 19th-century Caste War.

The Sacred Maya Journey recreates the historic pilgrimage between the mainland and Cozumel associated with Ixchel. Canoeists cross from Xcaret to the island, with public ceremonies and viewing areas forming part of the annual cultural event.

Cozumel hosts major international triathlon events, including IRONMAN 70.3 and the full IRONMAN Cozumel. The races combine sea swimming, cycling and running, and can bring significant road closures and transport changes around the island.

Catamarans and smaller boats operate sunset cruises from Cozumel’s west coast, with some including drinks, light meals or snorkelling. Experiences range from relaxed small-group trips to livelier party boats, so check the style and inclusions carefully before booking.

Some Cozumel resorts offer live music, themed dinners, entertainment or beachfront evenings. Beach clubs generally focus more on daytime visitors, so evening opening varies. Check access, inclusions and return transport in advance, particularly for venues outside San Miguel.

Guided tastings offer a relaxed way to spend an evening in Cozumel, with samples of Mexican chocolate, tequila and mezcal alongside explanations of how they are made. Some experiences also include pairing sessions or short demonstrations. Check what is included before booking and avoid driving afterwards.

Guided food walks visit taquerias, family-run restaurants and local food stops beyond the main waterfront. They can be a useful way to try several dishes while learning about ingredients and regional flavours. Dietary requirements and allergies should be mentioned before the tour.
