Belle Mare’s steady south-east trade winds make the lagoon a great spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, especially during the breezier months. The sheltered water gives riders plenty of space, whether they are experienced or trying the sport with an instructor.

The calm lagoon around Belle Mare makes it easy to see what lies beneath the surface. Snorkelling brings swimmers closer to the reef, while glass-bottom boats are a gentler option for families or anyone who prefers to stay dry.

Horse riding along Belle Mare Beach offers a slower way to enjoy the coastline. Guided rides usually follow the sand at an easy pace, with wide sea views and long stretches of beach making the experience feel peaceful rather than rushed.

Bras d’Eau National Park, north of Belle Mare, is a good change of scenery after a few days by the sea. The Coq des Bois trail passes through forest and native vegetation and is easy enough for most casual walkers.

At Domaine de l’Etoile, the scenery shifts from lagoon to forest and open countryside. Visitors can explore the reserve by quad bike or buggy, try zip-lining, or take a horse ride through the landscape at a gentler pace.

Boats leave Trou d’Eau Douce for Île aux Cerfs throughout the day. Catamarans are better suited to relaxed sailing and snorkelling, while speedboat trips often cover more of the coast and include Grand River South East Waterfall.

Inside Bras d’Eau National Park, old stone remains offer a glimpse into the east coast’s sugar-producing past. A mill and small settlement once stood here, and traces of that former community can still be seen among the trees today.

Sugar played a major role in shaping Mauritius, and its influence is still visible around Flacq. Fields, former estates and old industrial remains recall a period when sugar production supported communities and became one of the island’s most important industries.

Long before it became the main departure point for Île aux Cerfs, Trou d’Eau Douce was known as a fishing village. Boats still gather along the waterfront, offering a small reminder of the community that existed here before tourism became so important.

A longer day trip from Belle Mare leads to Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From 1834, the site became closely linked to the arrival of indentured labourers brought to Mauritius under the British colonial system.

A short drive from Belle Mare, Central Flacq Market is one of the best places to see everyday life on the east coast. Stalls are piled with tropical fruit, vegetables, spices, clothing and local snacks, with Wednesdays and Sundays especially busy.

Set on Goyave de Chine island near Poste de Flacq, Sagar Shiv Mandir is a peaceful Hindu temple surrounded by the lagoon and mangroves. Visitors are welcome to admire the setting, but modest clothing and respectful behaviour are important at this active place of worship.

Sega is part of Mauritian culture across the island, including the east coast. Music, percussion, singing and dance come together in performances that reflect the island’s Creole heritage. Traditional Mauritian Sega was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014.

South of Belle Mare, Trou d’Eau Douce has grown into the main departure point for trips to Île aux Cerfs, but its fishing village character has not completely disappeared. Small boats, local restaurants and quieter streets still give the village an easygoing local feel.

Food around Belle Mare reflects the mix of cultures found across Mauritius. Creole dishes sit alongside Indian and Chinese influences, with seafood appearing on many menus. Local restaurants, beach shacks and market stalls offer an easy way to try flavours beyond the resorts.

Food takes centre stage at Constance Belle Mare Plage during this annual culinary festival. Michelin-starred chefs work alongside Constance chefs from across the Indian Ocean, with cooking and pastry competitions, special menus and masterclasses forming part of the programme.

Mystik Garden turns the grounds of The Residence Mauritius into a lively open-air music venue. The Belle Mare edition features international and Mauritian DJs, with Afro-house, Afro-tech and melodic techno playing from the afternoon through to late evening by the beach.

The MCB Ladies Classic brings professional women’s golf to Constance Belle Mare Plage, with players competing on the resort’s Legend Course. Held from 1 to 3 May in 2026, the tournament forms part of the Ladies European Tour and adds a major sporting event to Belle Mare’s calendar.

Belle Mare Public Beach is one of the coastal gathering points used for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Devotees arrive for prayers and the traditional visarjan, when clay statues of Ganesh are carried to the shoreline and immersed in the sea.

Evenings in Belle Mare tend to be relaxed rather than lively. Most resorts offer beachfront bars, live music, themed dinners and occasional cultural performances, so there is usually enough going on without the area ever feeling like a busy nightlife destination.

Golf is one of Belle Mare’s biggest draws away from the beach. Constance Belle Mare Plage has two championship courses, The Legend and The Links, both set in tropical surroundings and popular with experienced players as well as casual holiday golfers.

Dinner by the water is a big part of evenings in Belle Mare. Resorts offer everything from casual beachfront tables to smarter restaurants, while nearby villages have smaller local places serving seafood, Mauritian dishes and simple meals in a more laid-back setting.
