Deep in Uganda’s mist-covered Bwindi Forest, gorilla trekking takes you on foot through ancient rainforest in search of habituated mountain gorilla families. Treks can last several hours depending on their location, with one hour allowed for observing these incredible primates.

Known as the “Primate Capital of the World”, Kibale National Park protects one of Africa’s largest populations of chimpanzees. Guided treks lead you through tropical forest trails, where you can watch these intelligent primates feeding, communicating and moving through the trees.

The River Nile near Jinja offers one of East Africa’s most thrilling rafting experiences, with powerful rapids, scenic river stretches and opportunities to spot birds along the way. Guided trips range from half-day adventures to full-day expeditions suitable for different experience levels.

Known as the “Mountains of the Moon”, the Rwenzori Mountains offer some of Africa’s most challenging trekking routes. Hikers pass through bamboo forests, alpine valleys and glacier landscapes while climbing peaks such as Mount Stanley’s Margherita Peak, Uganda’s highest point.

Surrounded by terraced hills in southwestern Uganda, Lake Bunyonyi is one of the country’s most scenic spots for kayaking. The calm waters are ideal for beginners, with routes passing small islands, local villages and landscapes shaped by the region’s farming communities.

Namugongo Martyrs Shrine commemorates 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican converts who were executed between 1885 and 1887 under Kabaka Mwanga II. Today, the shrine is one of Uganda’s most important religious landmarks, attracting pilgrims each year, especially on Uganda Martyrs Day, 3 June.

Established in 1908, the Uganda Museum is the country’s oldest museum, preserving collections that explore Uganda’s cultural, archaeological and natural heritage. Located in Kampala, its exhibits include traditional musical instruments, historical artefacts, fossils and displays showcasing the lives of different communities across Uganda.

Located in eastern Uganda, the Nyero Rock Paintings are among the country’s most important archaeological sites. The ancient geometric artworks found on rock shelters are believed to date back thousands of years, offering insight into early human activity and cultural traditions in the region.

Located near Fort Portal in western Uganda, Amabere Caves combine natural formations with Tooro Kingdom legends. The limestone stalactites and stalagmites are linked to the story of Nyinamwiru, a princess from the ancient Tooro royal family, making the site culturally significant.

Standing on Kasubi Hill in Kampala, the Kasubi Tombs are the burial grounds of four former Kabakas (kings) of Buganda. The traditional thatched structure reflects Ganda architecture and remains an important spiritual and cultural centre for the Baganda people.

Mengo Palace, the former official residence of the Kabakas of Buganda, offers insight into Uganda’s royal and political history. Built in 1885, the palace witnessed major events during the colonial period and remains an important symbol of the Buganda Kingdom today.

The Buganda Kingdom remains central to Uganda’s cultural identity, with traditions passed down through royal ceremonies, music and clan customs. Visitors can learn about the Kingdom’s heritage through cultural sites, community events and the enduring role of the Kabaka in Buganda society.

Once the original forest dwellers of southwestern Uganda, the Batwa share their traditions passed down through guided cultural experiences near Bwindi and Mgahinga. Visitors can learn about traditional hunting methods, medicinal plants, music, dance and the community’s deep connection with the rainforest.

Living in northeastern Uganda, the Karamojong people have a strong pastoral heritage centred around cattle, traditional ceremonies and community values. Visitors can experience their distinctive way of life through village visits, storytelling, traditional dances and learning about their connection with the region’s landscapes.

Located in Kampala, Ndere Cultural Centre celebrates Uganda’s diverse traditions through music, dance and storytelling. Performances showcase customs from different regions, featuring traditional instruments, colourful costumes and folk songs, offering visitors an engaging introduction to the country’s cultural diversity in one place.

Celebrated by the Bagisu people in eastern Uganda, Imbalu is a traditional initiation ceremony marking the transition of young men into adulthood. Held every two years, the festival features music, dancing and community gatherings that celebrate Gisu identity and heritage.

Bark Cloth Making is one of Uganda's oldest traditional crafts, practised mainly by communities in the Buganda region. Made from the inner bark of the Mutuba tree, the fabric is used for clothing, ceremonies and cultural rituals and is recognised by UNESCO.

By the evening of 2nd June, the roads leading to Namugongo fill with pilgrims who have walked for days, some even weeks, to reach the shrine. On 3rd June, outdoor Masses, prayers and hymns commemorate the 45 Ugandan Martyrs, making it one of Africa's largest annual Christian pilgrimages.

The Nile becomes the festival’s backdrop as thousands gather for four days of music, riverside camping and late-night performances. Spread across multiple stages near Kalagala Falls, Nyege Nyege pairs adventurous African sounds with art installations, film, fashion and adrenaline activities on the river.

Lunkulu Island becomes a giant creative playground during Bayimba, where you might watch a theatre performance, step into a photography exhibition, then end the evening listening to live music by the lakeshore. It is Uganda's longest-running multidisciplinary arts festival, bringing every art form together.

Long before sunrise, thousands of runners dressed in matching event shirts gather at Lubiri Palace before setting off through Kampala’s streets. Organised annually by the Buganda Kingdom, the run raises awareness and funds for public health causes while bringing communities together in remarkable numbers.

Each year, Hoima welcomes thousands for Empango, the coronation anniversary of the Omukama (King) of Bunyoro-Kitara. Royal processions, traditional drumming, cultural performances and clan ceremonies transform the city into a celebration of one of Uganda's oldest kingdoms.

Kampala comes alive after sunset, with rooftop bars, live music venues, restaurants and lounges spread across neighbourhoods like Kololo, Bugolobi and Kisementi. From Afrobeat performances to relaxed evening dining, the capital offers a lively introduction to Uganda’s modern social scene.

A sunset cruise on Lake Victoria offers a peaceful way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. Departing from Entebbe, many cruises combine scenic lake views, birdlife, light refreshments and live music as the sun sets over Africa’s largest lake.

Kampala’s food scene blends traditional Ugandan flavours with international influences. From bustling markets and roadside eateries to contemporary restaurants, visitors can sample local favourites such as rolex, luwombo, matoke and freshly grilled meats across the city.

Music is woven into everyday life in Uganda, with live performances taking place across Kampala’s bars, cultural venues and entertainment spaces. Expect everything from traditional drumming and folk music to Afrobeat, reggae and contemporary Ugandan artists performing throughout the week.

Since 1959, the Uganda National Theatre has been a hub for the country’s performing arts. Visitors can enjoy theatre productions, live music, dance performances, comedy shows and art exhibitions, offering a glimpse into Uganda’s vibrant contemporary creative scene.

Uganda crafts village in Kampala is a favourite stop for locally made souvenirs, from handwoven baskets and bark cloth to jewellery, wood carvings and colourful textiles. It is an ideal place to browse traditional crafts while supporting local artisans and taking home authentic keepsakes.

You will spot rolex stalls across Kampala long before you smell them. Fresh chapatis are wrapped around eggs, vegetables and optimal fillings, then cooked to order in minutes. It is Uganda’s best-known street food and a favourite late-night snacking among locals.

Unlike a traditional lake cruise, the Kazinga Channel boat safari brings you remarkably close to wildlife. Hippos crowd the shoreline, elephants often arrive to drink, while crocodiles and countless waterbirds make every trip through Queen Elizabeth National Park feel different.
