Hidden near Mollem, Tambdi Surla is Goa’s oldest surviving temple, built from dark basalt in the 12th century and dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its compact shrine carries finely carved figures, while stone steps lead towards the Surla River and surrounding forest.

Goa Carnival arrives before Lent, filling Panaji and other towns with decorated floats, costumed performers, music and street crowds. King Momo leads the celebrations with his traditional call to make merry. Dates shift each year, so check the parade route before travelling.

Celebrated around March or April, Shigmo brings Goa’s spring traditions into village squares and evening street parades. Expect drumming, folk dances, painted faces and illuminated floats drawn from Hindu mythology. Festivities move between towns, so the local schedule matters when planning a visit.

Every 24 June, São João honours Saint John the Baptist with flower crowns, music and monsoon-soaked celebrations. Siolim is known for its decorated boat parade, while some villages retain the custom of jumping into wells. Visitors should watch rather than copy risky local traditions.

Held in Old Goa on 3 December, the Feast of Saint Francis Xavier draws pilgrims to the Basilica of Bom Jesus for prayer and Mass. Temporary stalls and large crowds gather around the church complex, giving this religious observance a busy, communal atmosphere.

Running from 20 to 28 November in 2026, the International Film Festival of India brings Indian and world cinema to Goa. Screenings sit alongside masterclasses, industry discussions and red-carpet events. Delegate registration is normally required, and popular sessions can fill quickly.

From 13 to 20 December 2026, Serendipity Arts Festival turns venues across Panaji into spaces for visual art, theatre, dance, music, food and craft. Much of the programme spreads beyond conventional galleries, making the city itself part of the experience. Check access requirements.

Anjuna’s Wednesday flea market grew from the area’s 1960s hippie scene into a sprawling mix of clothing, jewellery, crafts and food stalls. It usually runs from late morning into the afternoon; arrive early, carry cash and expect friendly bargaining rather than fixed prices.

Arpora’s Saturday night markets mix shopping with food, music and live performances, making them more evening outing than ordinary market. Stalls tend to sell clothing, crafts and souvenirs alongside international dishes. They are seasonal, so confirm opening dates before making a special journey.

Evening cruises leave Panaji for an hour on the Mandovi, combining riverside views with DJ music and Goan folk dances. Seating is generally unreserved, snacks cost extra and boarding includes a bag check. Book ahead when travelling during weekends or busy holiday periods.

Recognisable by its checked pattern and sturdy handwoven cloth, the Kunbi sari is closely associated with Goa’s indigenous Kunbi community. Once designed for practical daily work, it is now being revived by local weavers and designers, keeping the textile visible beyond museum displays.

Goa’s azulejos carry a Portuguese tile tradition into local settings, appearing as house signs, street names, decorative panels and painted scenes. Usually made from glazed ceramic, the blue-and-white designs are the best known, although Goan workshops also produce brighter, highly personalised pieces.

Kaavi art begins with a rust-red layer of laterite pigment laid over pale lime plaster, then carefully engraved so the lighter surface shows through. Geometric borders, flowers and sacred figures decorate temples, churches and older homes, though surviving examples are easily missed.
