Walk around Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour and you are standing inside one of the most important naval sites in the Caribbean. The restored dockyard, warehouses and officers’ quarters are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remain the world’s only continuously operating Georgian naval dockyard. 

The two restored windmills at Betty’s Hope are among Antigua’s most recognisable historic landmarks. They also point to a much harder story: this was the island’s first large-scale sugar plantation, worked for generations by enslaved Africans whose labour helped build Antigua’s colonial economy.

The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, housed in an eighteenth-century courthouse in St. John’s, is worth a stop before exploring the island further. It exhibits move from Indigenous history and archaeology through colonial rule, slavery, independence and modern Antigua.

Much of Antigua’s historic character comes from the British colonial period. Georgian buildings, old churches, military forts and harbour towns are still scattered across the island, especially around St. John’s and English Harbour.

For more than two centuries, Antigua’s sugar industry depended on enslaved Africans. Emancipation came in 1834, but the effects of slavery did not disappear overnight. Historic sites such as Betty’s Hope make that history difficult to ignore.

Antigua’s deep natural harbours made it a strategic British naval base for much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today the military ships are gone, but the island’s connection to the sea remains obvious in places like English Harbour and during major sailing events such as Antigua Sailing Week.

A short boat ride from Seatons Village brings you to Stingray City, where southern stingrays glide through shallow, crystal-clear water. Guides explain how to interact with them before you are free to snorkel and spend time watching these graceful animals in their natural surroundings. 

Antigua’s rainforest offers a welcome change from the coastline. Near St. Peter’s, a network of zip lines, suspension bridges and elevated platforms winds through the tropical canopy, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the island’s lush interior while adding a healthy dose of adrenaline.

Just offshore from Jolly Harbour, Cade Reef is one of Antigua’s best-known snorkelling sites. The reef is home to colourful coral, tropical fish and remarkably clear water, making it an easy choice whether you are snorkelling for the first time or returning for another dive.

The waters around English Harbour hide far more than you might expect. Coral reefs, marine life and historic shipwrecks lie beneath the surface, while consistently good visibility allows divers of all experience levels to explore comfortably throughout much of the year.

Many catamaran trips leave from English Harbour or Jolly Harbour, following Antigua’s coastline and dropping anchor in secluded bays along the way. Most cruises include time for swimming and snorkelling, although simply enjoying the view from the deck is reason enough to go.

Setting off from Jolly Harbour, this trip combines the excitement of driving your own speedboat with a snorkelling stop along Antigua’s southwest coast. It is a fun way to experience the island’s reefs, especially if you would rather do more than relax on the beach.

The trail from Galleon Beach leads to the Pillars of Hercules, a series of limestone formations shaped by centuries of wave action. It is an enjoyable coastal walk with wide ocean views, rugged cliffs and quiet coves appearing along the route.

Reaching Rendezvous Bay takes a little effort, but that’s part of its appeal. The trail crosses gentle hills before ending at one of Antigua’s most secluded beaches, where white sand and turquoise water replace the crowds found elsewhere on the island.

The sheltered waters of English Harbour are well suited to Kayaking. Paddling along the coastline brings you past mangroves, quiet coves and anchored yachts, offering a slower way to appreciate one of Antigua’s most scenic harbours.

If you are looking for calm water, Dickenson Bay and Pigeon Point Beach are among the best places to paddleboard. The conditions are usually gentle enough for beginners, while the clear Caribbean Sea makes the experience enjoyable regardless of your skill level.

Steelpan, calypso and soca are part of everyday life in Antigua, not just festival season. You will hear them during Carnival, at Shirley Heights on Sundays, and at community events throughout the year, where live bands often play late into the evening.

Cricket has deep roots in Antigua and remains one of the island’s favourite sports. Local grounds host regular matches, and conversations about the game are never hard to find. Antigua is also the birthplace of cricket legend Sir Vivian Richards, whose legacy is still widely celebrated. 

The markets in St. John’s are a good place to see daily life beyond the beaches. Alongside fresh produce and spices, you will find handcrafted jewellery, woven baskets, artwork and souvenirs made by local artisans, many of whom sell directly from their own stalls.

English is the official language, although everyday conversations often include Antiguan Creole. Visitors quickly notice how easy it is to strike up a conversation, whether at a market, a beach bar or while waiting for a local bus. People are generally happy to share directions or recommend a favourite place to eat.

Every Sunday, Shirley Heights overlooks one of Antigua’s busiest evenings. People gather above English Harbour for live steelpan, reggae and soca, while food stalls serve barbecue and local drinks. Go before sunset if you want the best view across the harbour.

Held every Spring, Antigua Sailing Week centres on English Harbour. International sailing teams compete during the day, while the harbour hosts live music, food vendors and evening events. Even if you are not following the races, there is plenty happening onshore.

Beach bars are found all around Antigua, especially near Dickenson Bay, Jolly Harbour and Pigeon Point Beach. Most serve fresh seafood, local dishes and tropical drinks. They are popular in the evening, particularly around the sunset when the waterfront is at its busiest.

Food tours in St. John’s usually combine local restaurants with visits to neighbourhood markets. Along the way, you will find traditional dishes such as fungi, pepper pot and fresh seafood, while guides explain how these foods became part of Antiguan cooking.

Live music is easy to find in Antigua, particularly around English Harbour, St. John’s and waterfront restaurants. Steelpan, reggae, calypso and soca are regularly performed during the evening, especially at bars, festivals and community events. 

Carnival is Antigua’s biggest annual event and takes place in St. John’s each summer. It marks emancipation with street parades, costume competitions, steelpan performances and soca music. The celebrations run for more than a week, with events taking place throughout the capital.

For sailing fans, late April is one of the best times to be in Antigua. Racing yachts from around the world gather in English Harbour, and once the day’s races are over, the marina fills with music, food and crews swapping stories. 

A few days before Sailing Week begins, English Harbour belongs to beautifully restored wooden yachts taking part in the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. The sight of these historic boats sailing under full canvas is reason enough to visit, even if you know nothing about sailing.

Restaurants across Antigua put together special menus every May, making it easy to try everything from fresh seafood to modern Caribbean cooking. It is one of the few times of year when many of the island’s best restaurants offer set menus at special prices. 

Around May or June, Nelson’s Dockyard becomes the meeting point for anglers arriving from across the Caribbean and overseas. The tournament is serious, but the marina has an easy-going atmosphere with food stalls, music and plenty of spectators following the action. 

1st November marks Antigua and Barbuda’s Independence Day. Expect parades, concerts, cultural performances and community celebrations across the island, with fireworks lighting up the sky after sunset.
