The Karakum dominates much of Turkmenistan's interior and is crossed by long roads linking distant towns and historical sites. Organised desert journeys can include remote settlements, camp stops and visits to Darvaza. Distances are considerable, so travelling with an experienced local driver and suitable vehicle is far more practical than treating the desert as an independent road trip.

Reaching Yangykala is part of the experience. The canyon lies far from the country's main cities and is approached across remote roads and tracks before opening into broad views across colourful cliffs and dry plateaux. There are few visitor facilities, so trips should be properly organised with water, transport and local guidance.

Koytendag in eastern Turkmenistan combines mountain scenery, gorges, caves and geological sites. The region is also associated with preserved dinosaur footprints and contains some of the country's highest terrain. Its remoteness makes it better suited to an organised excursion than an improvised day trip.

Kow-Ata lies inside a cave near Baharly, roughly 100 kilometres from Ashgabat. A long staircase descends into the cavern, where naturally warm water fills an underground lake. The cave is protected as a natural monument and has long been used as a bathing place. Visitors should take care on the steep steps and check local access arrangements before travelling.

Horse farms and organised equestrian visits provide a closer look at the Akhal-Teke breed beyond formal festivals. For travellers interested in living heritage rather than only monuments, seeing how the horses are bred, trained and decorated connects directly with a tradition recognised by UNESCO.

Merv grew through a succession of settlements in the Murghab oasis and became one of the great urban centres on the Silk Roads. Its surviving archaeological landscape covers thousands of years rather than one single historical period.

From around the 3rd century BC, the Parthian Empire became one of Rome's major rivals. Nisa was one of its earliest and most important centres, positioned on trade and communication routes between Central Asia and the Mediterranean world.

Kunya-Urgench developed as an important centre of the Khorezm region. Its surviving monuments reveal a city whose architecture and craftsmanship influenced areas far beyond present-day Turkmenistan, including Iran, Afghanistan and later Mughal architecture.

Parts of eastern Turkmenistan form part of UNESCO's transnational Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor, which follows historic caravan routes through Central Asian valleys and across the Karakum towards Merv. The corridor reflects centuries of trade, cultural exchange and settlement between the 2nd century BC and the 16th century.

Turkmenistan became independent following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Independence Day is now marked each year on 27 September and remains one of the country's principal public holidays.

Carpet weaving has a deep place in Turkmen cultural life, with distinctive patterns historically associated with different tribal communities. Traditional Turkmen carpet-making was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. The dutar, a long-necked two-stringed instrument, remains closely associated with Turkmen music and storytelling. The craftsmanship involved in making the instrument, together with traditional performance and singing, has UNESCO recognition. For visitors, live performances offer a different view of Turkmen culture from the country's monuments and museums.

Kushtdepdi combines singing, rhythmic movement and dance and is performed at celebrations and cultural events. The tradition was inscribed by UNESCO in 2017 and remains one of Turkmenistan's recognised forms of living cultural heritage.

The State Museum in Ashgabat brings together archaeological finds, historical exhibits and collections exploring Turkmen culture. It is a useful place to understand the country’s wider history before visiting archaeological sites such as Nisa or Merv.

Nowruz marks the arrival of spring and is one of the region’s oldest shared traditions. In Turkmenistan, the National Spring Holiday is celebrated on 21 and 22 March, with food, music, traditional games and public celebrations. Nowruz is also recognised by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.

Held in spring, the National Holiday of the Turkmen Horse celebrates the country’s Akhal-Teke heritage. Events can include equestrian displays, horse beauty competitions and activities linked to traditional decorative arts. Programmes vary each year, so dates and event details should be checked before travelling.

Turkmenistan celebrates Independence Day on 27 September. Official ceremonies and cultural programmes take place across the country, with the largest events centred on Ashgabat.

International Neutrality Day is observed on 12 December and is a public holiday in Turkmenistan. Ceremonies and organised events are mainly centred on Ashgabat and the country’s policy of permanent neutrality.

Ashgabat's white-marble buildings, broad avenues and monumental public spaces take on a different appearance after sunset when many major structures are illuminated. The capital holds the Guinness World Record for the highest density of white marble-clad buildings, making an evening drive or guided walk one of the easiest ways to appreciate the scale of its modern architecture.

Turkmen dutar music and vocal traditions remain an important part of the country's cultural life. Performances may be arranged through theatres, festivals, hotels or organised tours, although programmes change throughout the year.

Horse racing, equestrian displays and Akhal-Teke beauty competitions form part of Turkmenistan's horse culture. The most prominent programmes take place around the annual National Holiday of the Turkmen Horse, although smaller equestrian events may also be arranged at other times.

Ashgabat has restaurants serving Turkmen and broader Central Asian food, giving evenings a slower rhythm centred more on dinner and conversation than late-night entertainment. Traditional dishes such as palow, dograma and ishlekli are worth seeking out rather than relying only on international hotel menus.
