The Luxury Room suits couples or small families who want a comfortable base within one of the historic planter bungalows. The 40 sqm room comes with either a king bed or twin beds, along with period-style furnishings and an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub, walk-in rain shower and twin vanities.
The Garden Suite is designed for guests who value their own outdoor space. At 50 sqm, it has a king bedroom and a verandah leading to a private tropical garden. Some Garden Suites also have fireplaces, adding another feature for stays in Sri Lanka's cooler hill country.
The Master Suite is a larger option for families or guests who want separate sleeping and living areas. The 70 sqm layout includes a king bedroom and a furnished living room, giving guests more space to relax during their stay. A verandah leads to a private tropical garden, and some Master Suites also have fireplaces.
The Owner's Cottage is a detached one-bedroom option at Dunkeld Bungalow. At 120 sqm, it gives couples or small families their own cottage with a four-poster king bed, furnished living room and private outdoor space. A verandah looks across the surrounding tea country.
The Estate Suite suits families and groups who want two bedrooms while staying together. It has two king bedrooms, two en-suite bathrooms and a separate furnished living room. A verandah leads to a tropical private garden, and some bedrooms have fireplaces. Butler service, complimentary Wi-Fi and laundry are included. The suite accommodates up to six guests, with two extra beds available at an additional charge.
Daily dining is planned with the bungalow chef rather than built around fixed menus and set meal times. Breakfast can be English or Sri Lankan, while lunch options include a three-course meal or Sri Lankan rice and curry. Traditional afternoon cream tea and a four-course dinner are also part of the Tea Trails dining experience.
Traditional afternoon cream tea includes scones, clotted cream, jams, cakes and sandwiches. It is served as part of the daily Tea Trails dining experience, and guests can also visit the other bungalows for cream tea during their stay.
Tea-Infused Dinner explores how Sri Lankan tea can be used as part of a meal rather than only served as a drink. Different teas are paired with ingredients and used in cooking methods across courses, including dishes based around fish, meat and desserts.
Discover Sri Lankan Cuisine is a hands-on cooking experience with a Tea Trails chef at the guest's bungalow. The session introduces local spices, ingredients, cooking utensils and preparation methods, with guests taking part in making and tasting Sri Lankan dishes.
Tea Planter’s Tiffin Lunch is served in tiffin boxes at selected hillside spots around Dunkeld Bungalow. The setting can include tea fields, forest, Castlereagh Lake and the surrounding mountains, taking lunch away from the bungalow dining room and onto the estate.
Garden Picnic Breakfast is served outdoors in the grounds of Tientsin, Dunkeld, Norwood or Castlereagh. Guests staying in a Garden Suite or Master Suite can also have the experience in their own private garden.
Al Fresco Barbeque Lunch is prepared by the resort’s Relais & Châteaux kitchen and served at a private, scenic spot on the working tea estate, with butler service during the meal.
Lake Cruise combines time on Castlereagh Lake with dining on board. The official experience includes breakfast and/or lunch, with food prepared using locally sourced ingredients. Wine or Champagne can also form part of the experience.
Junior Chef gives younger guests the chance to prepare simple local food with guidance from the Tea Trails team. Activities can include coconut and treacle pancakes, coconut and cinnamon cookies and freshly made fruit juice.
The Tea Experience takes guests through Dunkeld Tea Factory with the resident Tea Planter. The tour explains the history of Ceylon tea, how leaves are processed and how different flavours develop. Guests can also visit the Pekoe Trail Visitor Centre at Dunkeld Tea Factory to learn more about the long-distance walking route and Sri Lanka’s tea heritage.
Private Tea Tasting is led by Bernard Holsinger, Tea Trails’ resident Tea Planter. The private session looks at the different flavours and characteristics found across Sri Lankan teas, offering more detail than the general Tea Experience.
Afternoon Estate Tea Walk is a gentle guided walk of no more than 500 metres from the bungalow to a viewpoint within the tea estate. A member of the Naturalist Team shares information about Sri Lanka’s tea regions, estate history and planter life along the way.
Tea & Tales from Peak Ridge introduces guests to conservation work around the Peak Ridge Forest Corridor. Following The Tea Experience at Dunkeld Tea Factory, a resident naturalist uses maps, camera-trap footage and field stories to explain how fragmented forest areas are being reconnected.
Trekking the Trails takes guests through the tea estates and forest patches surrounding the five bungalows. Routes connect properties that are between 4km and 15km apart and can be explored independently or with a Tea Trails Naturalist or Experience Guide.
Guided Nature Excursions combine walking or cycling with information about the landscape around the working tea estates. A Tea Trails Naturalist or Trail Guide introduces guests to local plants, wildlife, history and estate life during the journey.
Ceylon Tea Trails gives guests access to Stages 6, 7, 8 and 9 of the Pekoe Trail, a 300km route made up of 22 stages through Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands. These walks pass through tea country, highland communities and forested landscapes.
Biking the Trails gives guests another way to explore the tea country around Bogawantalawa. Mountain bikes are available at the bungalows, allowing guests to take shorter rides independently.
Kayaking on Castlereagh Lake lets guests explore the water between the tea-covered hills surrounding the reservoir. Two-person kayaks are used, and guided outings include safety instructions from a resident Trail Guide.
Lake Cruise takes guests across Castlereagh Lake by boat, with breakfast and/or lunch available on board. Breakfast is prepared using locally sourced ingredients, while wine or Champagne can also be included.
Adam’s Peak Ascent is an early-morning climb of Sri Pada, which reaches 2,250 metres. The walk is timed to reach the summit at dawn, when the sunrise can create the famous Shadow of the Peak. Tea Trails can also prepare a packed breakfast for guests setting out on the climb.
Whitewater Rafting takes place on the Kelani River at Kitulgala, around 1.5 hours from Ceylon Tea Trails. The route includes seven Class III rapids and is operated through an adventure company that meets the hotel’s stated safety standards.
Peak Wilderness Exploration is a guided visit to the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, part of the UNESCO-listed Central Highlands. A resident Naturalist accompanies the excursion and introduces guests to the area's montane forest environment and biodiversity.
Horton Plains Exploration takes guests into Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands for walking through montane grassland and cloud forest. The area is known for endemic plants and wildlife, as well as the World’s End viewpoint.
Makandawa Forest Reserve Exploration takes guests into tropical rainforest near Kitulgala for a guided nature walk. The forest provides habitat for resident, endemic and seasonal birdlife, along with small mammals, fish and amphibians.
Kandy Heritage Excursions is a cultural day trip accompanied by a Tea Trails resident Naturalist. The itinerary includes Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, a picnic lunch and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the UNESCO-listed Sacred City of Kandy.
Nuwara Eliya Heritage Excursions explores the hill town and its key sights with a Tea Trails resident Naturalist. Stops can include the Hill Club, Lake Gregory, Hakgala Botanical Gardens, Nuwara Eliya Market, the Grand Hotel and Dilmah Tea Lounge.
Spa Treatment & Luxury Baths brings wellness treatments directly to the guest room. Guests can arrange spa therapies, tea-infused scrubs and aromatic baths, which can be particularly useful after walking, cycling or other active days around the estate.
Each of the five Ceylon Tea Trails bungalows has its own large swimming pool. Dunkeld, Summerville and Castlereagh pools overlook Castlereagh Lake, while Norwood and Tientsin face the surrounding tea-covered mountains.
Selected Ceylon Tea Trails bungalows have heated Jacuzzis or hot tubs as part of their shared or accommodation facilities. Tientsin has heated outdoor hot tubs, while Jacuzzi or hot-tub facilities are also available at selected other bungalows.
Tennis is available on the clay court at Tientsin Bungalow. Guests staying at the other bungalows can visit Tientsin for a game and combine the visit with lunch or afternoon tea.
Croquet is available on lawns at Norwood and Summerville. It is an easy, low-intensity activity that can be enjoyed between meals, walks and other estate experiences.
Junior Tea Planter introduces younger guests to how Ceylon tea is grown and how altitude and climate affect the plant. An expert planter or naturalist leads the activity and explains life on the surrounding tea estates.
Junior Chef gives children a hands-on introduction to local food through simple cooking activities. Young guests can prepare coconut and treacle pancakes, coconut and cinnamon cookies and fresh fruit juice.
The five planter bungalows are surrounded by established gardens and lawns, giving guests outdoor areas to use between organised activities. Summerhouses are also set within selected bungalow grounds.
Intimate Celebrations can be arranged for birthdays, anniversaries and other personal milestones. Celebrations can use the estate’s historic bungalows, tea-country setting and surrounding gardens, with arrangements personalised around the occasion.
Weddings at Ceylon Tea Trails can be arranged for small ceremonies or larger celebrations across the bungalow estate. A resort wedding planner helps organise the occasion, with arrangements tailored to the couple and the setting.
Honeymoon stays at Ceylon Tea Trails can combine time at the bungalows with estate activities such as nature walks, swimming, tennis and croquet. The experience can be personalised around the couple rather than following a fixed programme.
