Visa Information

British citizens travelling to Sydney need an Australian visa or travel authority before departure. The eVisitor visa or ETA are the main options for short visits.

Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for the full length of your stay in Australia.

Things to Do

Explore Sydney’s culture, iconic attractions, outdoor adventures, nightlife, historic sites and major events across the city and harbour.

Adventure

Sydney makes outdoor time easy, with bridge climbs, surf lessons, coastal walks, kayaking, snorkelling and seasonal whale watching close to the city.

Culture

Sydney’s culture runs through Gadigal heritage, contemporary art, migrant neighbourhoods, live music and the everyday rituals of its harbour city.

History

Sydney’s history reaches far beyond 1788, with Gadigal Country, colonial settlement, convict sites and working harbour heritage still visible around the city.

Entertainment

Sydney evenings can mean harbourfront dinners, small bars, theatre, live music, rooftop drinks or a late night in one of its inner-city neighbourhoods.

Events

Sydney’s calendar moves from waterfront art and New Year fireworks to summer festivals, Mardi Gras, agricultural traditions and the citywide glow of Vivid.

Top Attractions

Sydney’s headline sights gather around its harbour and coast, mixing landmark architecture, famous beaches, gardens, wildlife and ferry views.

What to Eat

Sydney food draws heavily on the sea and the city’s multicultural communities, with excellent produce sitting comfortably beside unfussy Australian favourites.

Sydney Rock Oysters

Small, briny local oysters are best tried freshly shucked, either plain or with a restrained dressing.

Fresh Australian Seafood

Prawns, fish, oysters, sashimi and shellfish are easy to find, with the new Sydney Fish Market an obvious place to start.

Yum Cha

Chinatown and Haymarket are good places for a long lunch built around dumplings, buns and small steamed or fried dishes shared around the table.

Meat Pie

Flaky pastry filled with beef and gravy remains one of Australia’s simplest savoury classics, found everywhere from bakeries to cafés.

Fish and Chips

Fresh fish, crisp batter and chips make most sense near the water, particularly around the harbour or Sydney’s beach suburbs.

Lamington

Sponge cake covered in chocolate and desiccated coconut is an old Australian favourite, sometimes filled with jam or cream.

Flat White

Espresso and smoothly steamed milk with only a fine layer of foam make this a fixture of Sydney’s serious café culture.

Facts about Australia

Sydney combines ancient Aboriginal heritage, a working harbour, world-famous architecture, beach culture and neighbourhoods shaped by generations of migration.

  • Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and the state’s largest city.

  • Central Sydney stands on Gadigal Country, part of the lands of the Eora Nation.

  • Britain established a permanent colonial settlement at Sydney Cove in January 1788 after the arrival of the First Fleet.

  • Sydney Opera House officially opened on 20 October 1973 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Sydney Harbour Bridge opened in 1932, with its highest point standing around 134 metres above the harbour.

  • Royal Botanic Garden Sydney was established in 1816 and covers around 30 hectares beside the harbour.

  • The new Sydney Fish Market opened at Blackwattle Bay in January 2026, combining a working seafood market with restaurants, retail and visitor spaces.

Tips for Visiting Sydney

Sydney becomes much easier once the harbour, public transport and beach neighbourhoods are treated as part of the experience rather than obstacles between sights.

  • Give Sydney at least four full days, with a fifth useful if beaches, inner-city neighbourhoods and a slower harbour day matter.

  • Use an Opal card or contactless bank card across trains, metro, buses, ferries and light rail, tapping on and off with the same card or device.

  • Remember that Sydney Airport train stations charge an additional station access fee on top of the normal public transport fare.

  • Use ferries as part of the sightseeing rather than only as transport, particularly on the journey between Circular Quay and Manly.

  • Reserve major experiences such as BridgeClimb, Opera House performances and popular event viewing areas ahead when travelling on fixed dates.

  • At patrolled beaches, always swim between the red and yellow flags and speak to lifeguards if the water looks unfamiliar or rough.

  • Sydney works year-round, but its seasons are opposite to the UK, with summer from December to February and the coolest period falling around June to August.

  • Check your Australian visa approval before departure and make sure your passport remains valid throughout the planned stay.

  • Take comprehensive travel insurance even though eligible UK visitors may receive some essential healthcare under reciprocal arrangements. Ambulance services and medical evacuation are not covered by that agreement.

  • If travelling to Australia through the Middle East, check airline and FCDO updates before departure, as regional disruption can affect air routes and connections.

What to Pack

Pack for Sydney’s sunshine, coastal breezes and long days exploring, with light layers and strong sun protection.

Is it Safe to Travel to Sydney?

Sydney is a major international visitor destination with well-developed transport and tourist infrastructure, but no large city is risk-free. Travellers should take normal precautions around valuables and crowded areas, pay close attention to ocean conditions and extreme weather, and follow current FCDO and Australian authority advice. Current UK guidance also advises travellers to remain vigilant due to the threat of terrorism in Australia.

Key Safety Considerations

  • Swim only between red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches, as rip currents can carry even confident swimmers away from shore.

  • Check conditions before surfing, snorkelling or swimming and follow lifeguard instructions, warning signs and beach closures.

  • Keep phones, wallets and passports secure in crowded visitor areas, on public transport and during nights out.

  • Stay aware at major events and busy public places, and follow police or security instructions if conditions change.

  • Bushfire risk increases during the warmer months, particularly from October to February, so check official warnings when travelling beyond central Sydney.

  • Heavy rain and flash flooding can occasionally disrupt roads, public transport and walking routes, making official weather warnings worth checking during severe conditions.

  • Carry drinking water and use good sun protection on beaches, harbour walks and exposed coastal routes, even when the temperature does not feel extreme.

  • Dial 000 for an emergency requiring police, fire or ambulance services.

  • Temporary overseas visitors can generally drive in New South Wales on a current overseas licence for up to six months; licences not written in English require an English translation or International Driving Permit.

  • Keep comprehensive travel insurance covering medical treatment, ambulance transport and evacuation, rather than relying solely on the UK-Australia reciprocal healthcare arrangement.

Local Laws and Culture

  • Declare restricted food, plant material, animal products and other biosecurity items when entering Australia. If unsure whether something needs declaring, declare it.

  • The legal age for buying alcohol or drinking in a licensed venue in New South Wales is 18, and visitors may be asked for accepted photographic identification.

  • Pay attention to alcohol-free zone and alcohol-prohibited area signs, which can restrict drinking on particular streets, footpaths, parks and public spaces.

  • Smoking and vaping are banned in enclosed public spaces and several outdoor areas, including commercial outdoor dining areas and many public transport stops, platforms and ferry wharves.

  • Illegal drug importation and trafficking carry severe penalties in Australia, including lengthy prison sentences and possible deportation for foreign nationals.

  • Drivers using an overseas licence must follow New South Wales road laws. Fully licensed drivers are generally subject to a blood-alcohol limit below 0.05.

  • Recreational drone flying is prohibited in Sydney Harbour National Park, while flying in other national parks may require approval as well as compliance with national aviation rules.

  • Aboriginal cultural objects and places are legally protected in New South Wales. Never remove, damage, deface or interfere with objects, rock art or culturally significant sites.
