The mountain trail between Valbona and Theth crosses the heart of the Albanian Alps, linking two of northern Albania’s best-known valleys. Visitors can walk through forests and high alpine landscapes before reaching the pass, where views open across the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Near Çorovodë, the Osum River cuts through a limestone canyon stretching for around 26 kilometres, with walls reaching up to 80 metres high. Visitors can raft past waterfalls, caves and rock formations, with spring bringing higher water levels from melting mountain snow.

Llogara is Albania’s best-known paragliding area, where mountain slopes rise directly above the Ionian coast. Favourable wind conditions make it a popular launch point, while visitors taking to the air can see the Albanian Riviera spreading out below the surrounding mountains.

The Shala River runs through steep-sided scenery in northern Albania, known for its clear blue water and secluded setting. Kayaking gives visitors a closer look at the river and its surrounding canyon landscape, while boating, hiking and camping are also popular around the valley.

A marked trail near Tirana leads through the Skorana Canyon towards Pëllumbas Cave, one of Albania’s notable underground attractions. Visitors can combine the walk with cave exploration, making it an unusual outdoor experience within relatively easy reach of the capital.

In the centre of Durrës, this Roman amphitheatre dates from the early 2nd century AD and once held thousands of spectators. Visitors can explore the surviving structure and see later Christian remains, including a chapel decorated with mosaics.

Rozafa Castle stands on a hill overlooking Shkodër and the surrounding rivers and lake. Its history stretches back to the Illyrian period, with later Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman influences visible across the fortified site.

Gjirokastër is known for its steep streets, stone-roofed houses and architecture shaped during the Ottoman period. Visitors can wander through neighbourhoods that preserve much of the city’s 17th to 19th-century character beneath its imposing hilltop castle.

Near Fier, Apollonia preserves the remains of an important ancient city once connected to the Via Egnatia. Visitors can explore an odeon, portico, mosaic villas and religious buildings while learning about a settlement closely linked with the Greek and Roman worlds.

Kruja Castle played a major role in Albania’s medieval history and is closely associated with Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. Visitors can explore the fortified complex, visit the Skanderbeg Museum and continue into the old bazaar below the castle walls.

Southern Albania is known for iso-polyphony, a traditional style of group singing built around overlapping voices and a sustained drone. Visitors may hear it at festivals, weddings and cultural performances, particularly around Gjirokastër, Vlorë and other parts of the south. UNESCO recognises the tradition as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The xhubleta is a distinctive bell-shaped garment traditionally worn by women in the northern Albanian highlands. Made from wool and decorated with symbolic patterns, it reflects generations of specialist craftsmanship. Visitors can learn about the garment through cultural collections and displays dedicated to Albania’s highland traditions.

Kruja’s cobbled Old Bazaar remains closely associated with traditional Albanian crafts. Shops and workshops sell handwoven carpets, copperware, woodwork, filigree jewellery and traditional clothing, allowing visitors to see crafts that have long formed part of the town’s cultural identity.

Korça has a distinctive musical tradition centred around romantic serenades, traditionally performed with instrumental accompaniment. The songs remain closely connected with the city’s identity, and visitors can encounter them in local taverns, performances and cultural events celebrating this characteristic style of music.

Berat brings churches, mosques and a historic tekke together within its old neighbourhoods, reflecting a long tradition of different faith communities living alongside one another. Visitors can see this heritage around Mangalem, Gorica and the castle area, where religious buildings remain an important part of the city’s cultural landscape.

Celebrated on 14 March, Dita e Verës marks the arrival of spring and is especially associated with Elbasan. Visitors can expect street celebrations, music and the traditional sweet ballokume, which is closely linked with the festival.

Held periodically at Gjirokastër Castle, this is one of Albania’s most important folklore events. Performers from across the country bring traditional music, dance, costumes and rituals to the historic setting, with iso-polyphonic singing among its cultural highlights.

Tirana International Film Festival brings filmmakers, independent cinema and international productions to the capital. Established in 2003, the festival gives visitors the chance to see screenings, premieres and films from Albania and around the world.

Albania celebrates Independence Day on 28 November, marking the declaration of independence in Vlorë in 1912. Public events and commemorations take place around the country, with Vlorë holding particular historical importance because the declaration was made there.

Blloku is Tirana’s best-known area for nightlife, packed with restaurants, cocktail bars and clubs. Once reserved for Albania’s communist elite, the neighbourhood is now one of the capital’s liveliest social districts and a popular place for visitors to spend an evening.

The Dajti Ekspres cable car carries visitors from Tirana towards Mount Dajti, with views stretching across forests, surrounding countryside and the capital below. At the top, restaurants and recreational activities make it an easy half-day option beyond the city centre.

Located on Skanderbeg Square, Albania’s National Theatre of Opera and Ballet is the country’s leading performing arts institution. Visitors can check the programme for opera, ballet, symphonic concerts and other stage productions during their stay in Tirana.

Sarandë’s seafront promenade becomes a natural evening meeting point, with bars, restaurants and cafés lining the Ionian coast. Visitors can walk beside the water, stop for dinner or drinks and enjoy the city’s relaxed atmosphere after sunset.

Korçë’s restored Old Bazaar mixes cobbled streets and historic buildings with cafés, restaurants and evening entertainment. Visitors can combine dinner with live music or local drinks, making the area one of the city’s most atmospheric places to spend the evening.
