Accommodation
Nature Lodge
Nature Lodge is a charming 3-star eco-lodge nestled near the entrance of Amber Mountain National Park in northern Madagascar. Set amid lush mango and litchi trees, this tranquil retreat features 12 thatched wooden chalets with private decks offering panoramic views of Diego Suarez Bay and forested hills. You can enjoy hearty, locally inspired meals at the on-site restaurant, relax with drinks at the bar, and explore nearby nature trails, wildlife, and guided excursions. Designed with an eco-friendly ethos and warm Malagasy hospitality, it’s ideal for nature lovers seeking peace and authentic local experiences.
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we set off by car toward Amber Mountain National Park, where a knowledgeable local guide leads us into one of Madagascar’s most remarkable natural treasures. As the country’s very first national park, it protects a lush rainforest known for its extraordinary biodiversity. The landscape is rich with towering tree ferns, graceful palms, vibrant orchids, and a variety of rare endemic trees that thrive in this humid environment.
Along our walk, scenic waterfalls cascade through the forest, and serene crater lakes add to the park’s enchanting atmosphere. Wildlife encounters are a highlight of the visit. The forest is home to seven species of lemurs, including the crowned lemur and the Sanford’s lemur, which may be spotted leaping through the canopy. With luck, we may also observe chameleons, geckos, leaf-tailed geckos, and an array of brilliantly colored birds before returning to the hotel later in the afternoon.
Departing from Joffre Ville, we set out toward Mahamasina, taking time along the way to explore the remarkable Red Tsingy. Although its geological origins mirror those of the famous Tsingy of Ankarana, the Red Tsingy was formed thousands of years later. What distinguishes this striking landscape is its composition: while Ankarana’s formations are sculpted from limestone, the Red Tsingy emerged through the erosion of sandstone, giving it a warm, rust-colored hue and a dramatically different texture.
After our visit, we return to the main road and continue our journey toward Mahamasina. The drive leads us to the edge of a serene lake, where the impressive Tsingy massif rises in the distance. Situated only a few miles from the Mahavavy River, our lodge awaits us in this peaceful setting, offering a scenic and tranquil conclusion to the day’s adventure.
Accommodation
IHARANA BUSH CAMP
Iharana Bush Camp is a unique eco-bush camp set in the wild north of Madagascar, overlooking a peaceful lake with dramatic views of the Tsingy limestone massif at the edge of the Ankarana Reserve. Accommodation consists of around 16 to 18 handcrafted cabanas made from natural materials with thatched satrana roofs and ochre clay walls, each with a private bathroom and solar-powered lights, promoting a rustic, tech-free stay. The on-site restaurant and bar serve fresh meals and drinks with local flair, while a natural pool, massage services, and a craft shop add to the relaxed atmosphere.
Spend half a day exploring the remarkable landscapes of Tsingy de Bemaraha and its surrounding wilderness, beginning directly from your camp. You may choose to set out by traditional dugout canoe, gliding along the tranquil lake shores where rich wildlife thrives. Along the water’s edge, observe herons, cattle egrets, kingfishers, and drongos, often called the kings of birds, while vibrant butterflies shimmer above lush vegetation.
Alternatively, venture out on foot to discover the dramatic limestone formations of the tsingy and visit Mandresy Cave, an immense cavern adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Carefully designed private pathways equipped with ladders, bridges, and guardrails ensure both safety and spectacular viewpoints, including a sweeping panorama over Ambatomiloloha.
Throughout the excursion, the region’s exceptional biodiversity unfolds before you, revealing endemic flora, playful lemurs, diverse birdlife, and fascinating invertebrates. After returning to the hotel for lunch, continue your adventure in the evening with a guided walk along the Tsingy massif, reaching the cliff’s edge to observe nocturnal wildlife awakening.
We head south along a scenic road that gradually reveals the rich landscapes of northern Madagascar. Our journey first takes us through Ambilobe, where vast cashew plantations stretch across the countryside, and local life unfolds at a relaxed pace. Continuing onward, we reach Ambanja, renowned for its thriving coffee, cocoa, and fragrant ylang-ylang estates that perfume the air.
By late afternoon, we arrive at Ankify port and board a speedboat for a 45-minute crossing over turquoise waters to Hellville, the lively capital of Nosy Be. From there, a short taxi ride brings us to our beachfront hotel, where the ocean breeze and palm-fringed shores welcome us to a peaceful island retreat. The sunset paints the horizon in brilliant shades of gold and crimson light.
