British Airways (BA) has officially unveiled a significant long-haul expansion for the Winter 2026–2027 season. With a clear focus on growth and global connectivity, the airline is capitalising on shifting travel demand by announcing a 9% increase in its long-haul network compared to last year.

This strategic rollout is headlined by the highly anticipated return of Melbourne, Australia, with a daily year-round service from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) starting 9 January 2027, which is timed close to the Melbourne Grand Prix in March 2027. In addition, Colombo, Sri Lanka returns with a three-times weekly seasonal service from London Gatwick Airport (LGW) beginning 23 October 2026. While seasonal, it is a valuable addition for UK travellers, as the only current non-stop service between the UK and Sri Lanka is operated by SriLankan Airlines, meaning BA’s return introduces a new direct option on this route. Building on this, the airline is strengthening its routes to Asia and the Indian Ocean, providing more reliable and convenient travel options. Alongside these additions, BA is also increasing flight frequencies across North America, Africa, and other key long-haul markets to give global travellers greater flexibility and choice.

New Long-Haul Destinations: The Return to Melbourne and Colombo

The biggest news for travellers is that British Airways is flying back to Melbourne in Australia and Colombo, Sri Lanka

    • Melbourne (Via Kuala Lumpur)

Timed perfectly for the 2027 Australian Open (January 2027) and the Melbourne Grand Prix (March 2027), this daily service via Kuala Lumpur marks BA’s first return to Melbourne in decades. It will offer a same-plane service, improving convenience for travellers.
  •
    • Colombo, Sri Lanka

Operating Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, this seasonal winter route from Gatwick provides direct access to Sri Lanka, becoming a second non-stop option alongside SriLankan Airlines. Visit Sri Lanka to enjoy its golden beaches and wildlife safaris during the peak sunshine months. UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Sacred City of Kandy, along with vibrant cities and lush tea-covered hills, offer a rich and diverse experience for every traveller. Known for its warm hospitality and rich cuisine, the island is growing in popularity with UK travellers.
