Colombo, the vibrant and bustling capital city of Sri Lanka, is the one destination that blends the island’s treasured and authentic heritage with soaring skyscrapers and world-class shopping malls.

When visiting Sri Lanka, you’ll land into Colombo’s airport so it’s easy to either make the city your first or last stop of your fantastic itinerary. Colombo sits along the west coast of the island, and is a city of stark contrasts, don’t be surprised to find high-rise buildings sharing space with tiny specialist stores and mouth-watering food outlets - all of which adds to the charm of the destination.

A holiday in Sri Lanka isn’t complete without a stop in Colombo, as it’s a great base for many sights and experiences. Colombo is home to a beautiful park, a nearby water park and endless markets and restaurants. Colombo is also home to a great selection of boutique and luxury hotels that put you in the best locations possible to enjoy everything that the city has to offer.

We recommend pairing Sri Lanka with a luxury beach holiday to the Maldives. Experience the very best of culture & safaris with white beaches & overwater villas. Sri Lanka is home to so many incredible destinations and there's so many different ways to explore the island, depending on what you would like to see and do!

  • We recommend spending 3 nights in the Cultural Triangle to see all of the incredible UNESCO sites and climb the majestic Sigiriya Rock. Discover the amazing Golden Buddha Caves in Dambulla before spending 1 magical night in Kandy. Surround yourself with soothing incense in the mystifying Temple of the Tooth before heading back to relax in the comfort of your luxury hotel.

  • After that, catch the train to beautiful Ella and spend 3 nights relaxing in the hills - head into the emerald jungle to find Ravana Falls, a cascading waterfall straight from a fairytale. Journey south to Yala National Park for 2 nights of breathtaking safaris, you'll love seeing elephants as well as the largest gathering of gorgeous leopards!

  • Finish your amazing holiday in Sri Lanka's bustling capital city, Colombo, an easy stop to incorporate into your itinerary with its airport. Travel through the city on a trishaw (the rickshaw's cousin) and discover the Gangaramaya Temple, amazing with its unique blend of modern and cultural designs. Stroll through the parks and let time pass you by before you head home!

Things to do in
Gangaramaya Temple

Gangaramaya Temple is one of most sacred temples in the whole of Colombo, and also potentially the most interesting due to it displaying a unique mix of both modern design and cultural heritage.

This Buddhist temple draws inspiration architecturally from a wealth of different cultures and countries including Thai, Indian, Chinese and of course, Sri Lankan. It also houses an incredible collection of Buddha statues all sat in rows crossed legged, an excellent photo opportunity.

If you’ve left Colombo to last and you’ve realised you haven’t finished all of your shopping yet, don’t worry, you’re in the best place!

Colombo is home to some of the biggest and best shopping in the country; you’re bound to find everything and anything here. Head to the markets if you’re looking for unique Sri Lankan handicrafts and souvenirs, or make you way over to the spectacular department stores and shopping plazas for international and local fashion brands, high-end brands and home furnishings.

Ride a Trishaw

Known as the close relative of the rickshaw, be sure to set aside time for a trishaw ride around Colombo; just be sure to hold onto your hat!

A trishaw is another name for ‘cycle rickshaw’ which uses three wheels to pull along the passenger cart, and you’ll see them all over Colombo. Be sure to use them at least once, you might get addicted to the thrill of zipping all over the city!

Sri Lankan Cuisine

Sri Lanka’s unique location has greatly benefitted the cuisine is much, with influences coming from both South East Asia and India.

Colombo is a great place to try a wealth of mouth-watering Sri Lankan dishes, we’ll let you in on some of our favourites! Kottu roti is an absolutely delicious dish that you’ll find both in the finest restaurants and the street food stands, it’s similar to fried rice but it uses a type of flat, crispy bread instead with spicy curry sauce. Another great dish is kukul mas curry, which is a delicious coconut-based chicken curry, and you cannot beat hoppers for breakfast; Sri Lanka’s answer to the pancake!
